Ghost hunters

A team of ghost hunters experienced some spooky activity when they visited a pub in Thornton Heath.

Jack Bryer and the rest of UK Paranormal Investigations spent a night at the Wheatsheaf Inn on Saturday after landlady Maria Seal told them the pub had been the site of some unexplained occurrences, including bottles moving on their own in the bar and a permanently cold boiler room.

According to Mrs Seal the pub was once a court where prisoners were held before being hanged on Thornton Heath pond, then known as Gallows Green.

The team set up recording equipment including tape recorders and camcorders to try and capture evidence of any paranormal activity on film. Mr Bryer said: "We went into the part of the pub that used to be a court room and next door - now a boiler room which used to be where the accused were held. "We set up the camcorder and tape recorder for 45 minutes and when we reviewed it there was a very faint voice which said hello."

The camcorder also recorded several orbs, lights seen on a camera but not with the naked eye which are believed to be the manifestation of a spirit.

Mr Bryer added: "We went down to the basement and we heard a shuffling sound like someone was moving a cardboard box, which the camcorder picked up as well.

"We returned to the boiler room later and all five of us started feeling sick. Using a digital camera we were able to see lots of orbs and I asked the spirit if it would move the orbs round one of the team's head, which it did. I asked the spirit to do it a couple of times and each time the orbs moved.

"This is the first time I've seen orbs move like that. I'm sure the pub is haunted."

Mrs Seal said: "I watched the recordings, and it's just unbelievable. I'm not worried though, I've been here for four years and if something scary was going to happen I think it would have by now."

I wouldn't say all of them are nice.

That farmer, as I say, I believe was abusive. You get an ominous feeling whne he's about. ( Which fortunantly isn't often inside the house)

Still, he can't really do anything.

No, not nice, but "benign." As in, not deliberately trying to harm or terrorize you. As you said, the farmer--even though he was probably a jerk and a lout--can't do anything. So, much like a benign tumor (which, while not fatal, all things considered, you'd still rather not have one in you) I'm more willing to believe in ghosts/spirits like yours, that are harmless.

I just don't go for the chain-rattling, blood curdling screaming, old-fashioned ghost stories.

We very occasionally get knocking on a couple of the interior doors. I think it's one of the kids.

The sixth sense ranks as one of my top 3 favorite movies ever. The part where the boy mistook the dead woman who slit her wrists for his mom when she strode past him in the hallway made me want to sleep with the light on for a few days.

At first I thought it seemed rather fictional but, like you, after hearing first hand accounts of ghostly encounters, the hauntings that occur in this movie do seem very plausible.

I've seen her once or twice, just a glimpse of her shuffling along and then she's gone. This is usually in what is now the living room


In the living room is a spot where the cast iron stove used to be ( You can see the pie-plate thingy on the wall) In a corner, in what would be the warmest part of the room way back when, there is frequently a coldspot, and again, you get the hairs standing on end.

I can imagine a very old lady napping in her chair in the coziest corner of the room.

dljordan, your ghost cat story reminded me of an incident at my parents house. I used to work from 2pm-11pm and when I got home at 11:30 my parents were already in bed and the house was dark except for a small light so I wouldn't fall over anything (I'm really clumsy). So this particular night I get home and stopped at the kitchen table to get my mail and saw the cat come out of the dining room, brush against my legs and go under the kitchen table. I bent down to pet him again figuring he was either under the table or had jumped up on to one of the chairs, but he wasn't there. I looked around the room and he wasn't anywhere. I just thought it was odd and turned to go to my bedroom. Coming out of my parents room and down the back hallway and looking very much like he had just woken up was my parents cat, Pete. There was no way he could have gone from under the table to my parents bedroom without passing me and my not noticing. This cat is around 13-14 pounds. I think it was probably our cat we had to put to sleep a few years before this happened, Leroy. There were other incidents in that house where people would sit on the couch and feel something icy cold brush against their ankles. It scared the crap out of my dads friend. LOL I have a few more ghost cat stories that we think are Leroy coming to visit.

I tend to think that if you were a jerk in life there's a pretty good chance you will be a jerk in the afterlife, too. LOL

I think so, too. Once a jerk, always a jerk, even in the afterlife. When they say "you can't take it with you," I don't think they're talking about your personality. That always stays with you.

We should be rational minded enough to acknowledge that people do indeed experience phenomena such as those described here. Of course, there may be other explanations for them besides 'ghosts', but the experiences are nonetheless real enough to those who experience them.
