Bishop rescinds invitation to Gov. Kernan (because he is pro-choice)

No Need to R.S.V.P. Bishop rescinds invitation to Gov. Kernan to speak at St. Joe High School

(WSBT) Governor Joe Kernan's high school alma mater has withdrawn his commencement speaking invitation because of the governor's policy statements on abortion. South Bend's St. Joseph High School withdrew the invitation at the direction of Bishop John D'Arcy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. The bishop has direct authority over the school.

D'Arcy said that theology teachers at the school believed that Kernan's appearance would directly contradict the moral truths they teach and expect students to embrace.

He then directed the school's principal to withdraw the invitation in writing and to inform Kernan that D'Arcy had

requested the action.

Kernan's office wouldn't comment on the matter.

A spokeswoman said to her knowledge Kernan has never voted on abortion

legislation, consistent with the nonlegislative political offices he has held.

I am not catholic, but I believe this is a big story especially with the catholic church and kerry in the news. Even though I dont agree with the church on some things, it nice that they finally have the b*lls to stand up against pro-death rat politicians, that call themselves practicing catholics.

Im not catholic either but I agree....Its not about right and wrong...Its about "BASIC" beliefs and convictions...Catholics whose beliefs do not agree with the catholic church's "basic beliefs and convictions" should find another church in which their basic beliefs are accommodated....Simple as that...

What about Anti-Abortion, Pro Death Penalty Catholic politicians? Does anybody know if they get the same treatment?

Those are not equivalent. Supporting abortion violates fundamental Church doctrine.

Supporting the death penalty does not. At worst it violates the personal preferences of certain highly respected Catholic prelates. Church doctrine explicitly allows for the death penalty.

It's the difference between executing the innocent and executing the guilty. One is quite obviously wrong on its face. The other is debatable.

What you said. If it don't walk like a duck or quack like a duck or look like a duck, it aint a duck. It might be a slimy politician trying to get the ducks to vote for him - but that don't make it a duck.

I wish the Lutherians (ELCA) had the same moral backbone. Right now they are trying to grease the skids for a more 'enlightened' policy on homosexual clergy.

Article stated "A spokeswoman said to her knowledge Kernan has never voted on abortion...."

This is not true! Kerry is even for the painful partial birth abortion procedure and voted AGAINST a ban on partial birth abortion numerous times.

BTW, even though most pro-life organizations are against the death penalty, the Catholic Church does not have a dogma on the subject. Pope John Paul II is against the death penalty, for the most part, but Catholics do not have to do everything the Pope says, unless he is speaking Ex Cathedra (sitting in he Pope's chair).

May I add that only strong ignorance would make a person think that it is worse to kill a serial killer, for instance, than the most innocent of all lives - a pre-born child.

"Article stated "A spokeswoman said to her knowledge Kernan has never voted on abortion...." This is not true! Kerry is even for the painful partial birth abortion procedure and voted AGAINST a ban on partial birth abortion numerous times. "

The article was referring ot Indiana Governer Joe Kernan not John Kerry.

This article refers to GOVERNOR KERNAN OF INDIANA. You are referring to senator kerry from massachussetts. These are two different people.

I am not Catholic. I just thought that this Bishop deserved to be acknowledged for taking unpopular action. I respect him.
