(New York-AP) -- A little-known Republican state assemblyman is making his first, albeit unusual, campaign promise in his pledge to unseat Senator Charles Schumer.
Assemblyman Howard Mills vowed to plant 25 trees to replace the paper Schumer uses for his press releases.
Mills accused Schumer of killing 25 trees to issue 765 announcements, many issued on Sunday, a traditionally slow news day.
The Orange County assemblyman promised not only to not waste paper, but also to not waste the press's time on Sundays for what he called ``empty'' press conferences.
Posing with 25 pine saplings that he said his campaign would plant in a state park, Mills explained how he came up with the figure of 25 trees.
According to Schumer's Web site, the senior senator issued 765 press releases in 2003.
One tree produces approximately 80-thousand 500 sheets of paper, and there are about 18-hundred media outlets in the state.
Mills calculated sending press releases that average 1-point-5 pages adds up to about 25 trees a year.
A spokesman for Schumer balked at Mills' notion saying that Schumer ``is working hard and getting results seven days a week on issues that matter.''

Hmmmmm...
Maybe we should help this guy out in a few months with some anti-Schumer ads?

Sounds like another dimwit strategy from the same people who brought us Rick Lazio. NY Republicans are so moronic it's just not funny.

Anyone can be a winner with the right campaign strategy.
A real hail-Mary, over-the-top, stunt laden, stunning, shocking campaign (with real shock value) can make anyone a winner -- even an otherwise-dud.

Anyone but SCUMer, but this is a dumb attack.
One of the oldest and most effective tactics for someone to use is to send out a ton of press releases crowing about all that he says he's doing. Noisemaking works. And the tree attack is a softball for SCUMer's people to respond in that matter.

Unfortunately, there is no primary, and there is no way to get this Benjamin guy into the general.

Finally! Someone willing to go on record catching liberals in their own doublespeak.

Please explain to me why this guy changed his last name and why he has spent so much time living outside the United States. I like his politics, but he looks unelectable to me.

Aren't press releases sent electronically these days?
