Via phone, Cheney fires up GOP activists

Seated next to a life-size cutout of President George W. Bush, Aaron Herr was pumped Thursday night when the call finally came.

Vice President Dick Cheney was on the line.

The vice president was seeking out Herr and the 40 or so others gathered around the speakerphone at Cusanelli's restaurant in Lemay because of who they are - rock-ribbed Republicans devoted to re-electing the Bush-Cheney ticket in November.

"We need to have the largest grass-roots army in history," Cheney said during a 20-minute teleconference with backers gathered at more than 5,000 sites around the country, including at least 65 in the St. Louis area.

Called "National Party for the President Day," the aim of Thursday's gatherings was less about snagging new voters and more about energizing those already committed to the cause.

Cheney encouraged his listeners to go door-to-door, write letters to their local newspapers and call TV stations to advance the Republican message and woo more voters to the fold.

Although Thursday's event was national in scope, it came in the midst of dueling Missouri visits by Cheney - who was in the state Monday - and the likely Democratic nominee, Sen. John Kerry, who's in the state today.

The centerpiece of each man's trip is a speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. Cheney blasted Kerry's record on national defense, and Kerry is expected to fire back. Kerry also is slated to attend a $500,000 fund-raiser in St. Louis, where many Bush donors also reside.

Republicans acknowledge that Thursday's gatherings are modeled, in part, after the monthly grass-roots "meetups" that initially carried Howard Dean to the front of the Democrats' presidential pack. Kerry, a senator from Massachusetts, has continued the practice.

State Democratic Party spokeswoman Christine Glunz said Kerry would be hosting a similar "national party" on May 22...

Two Party's in Saratoga County, both had between 130-150 people. My only suggestion for next time is to start on time with the conference call and have Karen Huges do the intro, she's much more entertaining and lively than the guys who did it last night.

Twelve Freepers from Ohio and West Virginia gathered at the Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark, Ohio yesterday at high noon to "Party for the President". In attendance was ohioWfan, Dr.Deb, DollyCali, Common Tator, Mtntop3,dutchess,Molly Pitcher, mountaineer, Mrs.Mtntop3, WVNan and two lurkers, Kathey and Jennifer. Everyone was given a bumper sticker and a button and a flip-flop with "Flip-Flop Kerry's" decal on it.

ohioWfan shared her feelings about the President from day one and her experience of having a son who served in Iraq. Then she sang "God Bless America". Common Tator gave us some lessons in how to win people over to your side. Dr. Deb did a poll analysis. It was very informtive.

We enjoyed a catered buffet and good conversation until 3:00 p.m. Look for pictures and reports sometime this week-end at "A Few of Free Republic's Finest" thread.

I attended a great Party for the President in Moorpark, California. We had the press there and actually had a pretty good write up in the local paper. There were about 20 of us and what was really exicting is that TWO coalitions were formed - Ventura County Hispanics for Bush and Ventura County Jewish Republicans for Bush. Everyone there realized the importance of acting on the local level to support Bush on the national level. There were at least a dozen other parties going on in Ventura County that evening. I had one last weekend and am planning to have one the last Sunday of every month.

I know some Ventura County Freepers attended a BIG party for the President in Camarillo - hopefully they will be checking in shortly!!

Hi Ron, there was a good turnout in Santa Monica. It is hard to tell how many as it was at a bar and the crowd got mixed. We missed the phone call excitement, but everything was tons of fun. Met local conservatives (which is rare in my town) so that was nice.

Nan's FReeper Party for the President – Newark OH

Nan's FReeper Party for the President – Newark OH

About the warmest day of the year and SUNSHINE galore was the welcoming "committee" at Cherry Valley Lodge ( http://www.cherryvalleylodge.com/packages/seasonalpackages.cfm ) in Newark OH. This was the Ohio/WV FReeper Party for the President.. hosted by WVNan...

-- snip --

All of us met at least one new person.. Many of us met several. There were 9 FReepers and 3 spouses who shared the afternoon. I understand President Bushes' committee had hoped for 2004 different groups to be held that day/night. As usual we were over expectation with over 8000 parties being held around the nation. I also attended a large (150+)PM party in Mentor Ohio (another thread…later, eventually ????) where there was a video from the president & also live questions from parties answered by VP Cheney. That being said, I should interject that .. We had our own VIPs in Newark..

Included are below.. Dr. Deb.. our "poll lady" who did not disappoint with a great handout & good presentation that was in sync with Common Tator's prior presentation. Deb as a professional educator is a tribute to womanhood & to Politics done Right…she is fun to watch & listen to.! Thanks Dr. Deb.

. . . .

-- snip --

It is always a pleasure to listen to Common Tator's words.. some personal, some historical, some political, FULL of information with a smattering of humor & a smattering of uplifting material. His presentation was great & the question & answer following added depth. What a shame more could not have made the choice to attend & hear him. Alone that was worth the time, effort & $$$.

ohioWfan.. what a heavenly voice doing a luscious Sandi Patti presentation of God Bless America. She said she didn't like to PA.. but she is a pro & her genuine grace flowed & oozed around the room. She had a display of photos & memorabilia from son Eric's tour in Iraq. Many on FR have been prayer warriors with ohio & Eric… (Dr . Deb is holding a ceremonial "something" in her pix)

And then there is Nan.. dear WVNan.. our resident preacher and party organizer.. .. with a huge smile & hearty laugh. She brought 2 friends.. one Kathey , a returnee from last summer & newbie Jennifer. Hope they will register & be part of the FR family. Nan provided many "special things" including a flip flop a piece… (wont mention which FReeper took 2 – okay, accident?)…Thank you Nan for a wonderful job & the financial & time spent to make it a special day of sharing for us all.

-- snip --

The FLIP FLOPS

Newbie mntntop3 & wife were fun to chat with.. from Marietta .

Below are Dutchess & Common Tator

BTW…. Dutchess won the doorprize.. Sean Hannity's new book..

Below Mountaineer & Molly Pitcher "whoopin' it up"

-- snip --

Another shot of WV attendee is Mountaineer.. Gentle, funny, smart, considerate.. love her posts & love to listen to her when she gets a chance amonst many of we more "vocal (pushy, obnoxious) Freepers" .She is proudly displaying her flip/flop. From her sweet spirit one would never guess she to be a former asst Prosecuting Attorney !!!

Here are the FReepers present…

Back: Mtntop3, WVNan, Mountaineer, Dutchess
Front: ohioWfan, Molly Pitcher, Dolly Cali, Dr. Deb, Common Tator

My spouse and I attended a very nice party last night. Hosted by a great family, three great kids. Speaking of kids we had at least 6 or 8 Young Republicans there which was great to see.

We had about 20 people total. One ex-Marine was there. Very rejuvenating for all who attended.
