April 27, 2004 -- THE conventional wisdom is that the presidential election will be close. It's a 50-50 country, so the CW goes, just as it was in the year 2000.

Kerry is a terrible, terrible, terrible candidate.

It's not so much the policies he proposes, although they don't add up to all that much. The problem is Kerry himself. He no sooner opens his mouth than he sticks first one foot and then the other right in there.

People never had a high opinion of Clinton the man.

The American people seem to like a likable scoundrel, though.

It is too late for the Dems to do anything about this. You and I know that until the convention the nomination is not sewn up. But, when was the last time there was an open convention? In my opinion, it would throw the Democratic Party into a complete turmoil if the candidate who the party voted for in the primary was not the nominee.

Kerry is toast with even liberal Charlie Gibson and ABC News bitting him in the butt. The mainstream media sharks smell blood and Kerry is swimming in a pool of chum.

Yep, I agree. Even with the mild bump he's sure to get after the Dem convention, he'll slowly die a fool's political death until the November election's where Bush will more than likely win an electoral landslide.

I would fear more from Lieberman than Edwards. Edwards is easily and rightly portrayed as a lawyer who made his fortune from "litigation lottery" and would be in the back pocket of the trial lawyers.

Yup, that was how he was portrayed in his '98 US Senate race against Lauch Faircloth. Oh wait, Edwards won that . . . (moral=> don't underestimate Edwards and overestimate the gullibility of the American people!)

I think the Democrats made a MAJOR error in not giving a Lieberman candidacy more thought. Lieberman would have totally neutralized Bush's advantage on national security issues.

I told friends of mine that, although I would certainly not vote for Lieberman in the event that he was nominated, it would not be the end of the world for me if he was elected. He would have been a strong leader. If Lieberman's tough national defense stance could wrest a concession like that from a GOP diehard like myself, what could he have done with the great mass of politically moderate American voters?

Instead, the Dems are stuck with a candidate who surely looked moderate in contrast to the firebrand Dean, but who is actually to the left of Ted Kennedy and inspires no passion among his party's rank-and-file (reportedly, the Kerry camp is having real trouble finding volunteers). Once again, the "moronic" President Bush has stimulated the foolish instincts of his thickheaded opponents.

I do not see that. Kerry is the dem candidate, for better or worse.

This is the unfolding of giving Bush his 2nd term, and the dems looking to 2008. That is Hillary's year.

Presuming Bush stays with Cheney, I don't see a strong, up and comer, for 2008. Do you?

i understand that Kerry isn't looking too good as a candidate now (for liberals--we conservatives love him as a candidate)... however, according to the polls, he is not that far behind the President... and in some polls (Zogby for one) he is even a tad ahead... so why are so many talking about his collapse at this point? please enlighten this skeptical (afraid to believe in something that seems too good to be true) patriot of Thee U-nited States of America... anybody!!

Were it not for the "curse" and some resulting dead guys, this country would have embraced a Kennedy dynasty. I think Jeb can distinguish himself enough in the two years between runs.

I am not seeing any evidence of a Kerry collapse.

Ive been listening to Rush for over a month without seeing any polls. I expected to se KErry doen by 5-10 and Bush at or above 50. Instead there has been no real change in the polls for months. Bush's ads maybe hurting Kerry but they arent helping Bush
