My apologies if a thread already exists. I did a search on "Toomey" and found nothing.

I arrived at my polling area (suburban Philadelphia) at 6:45 am to hand out palm cards. The weather is terrific this morning, but turnout (I thought) was light (I had to leave at 9:15, but will be back).

The undecideds have had twenty-four years to get to know Arlen Specter. They're not going to break for him. The momentum is going Toomey's way.

Just for a hitorical perspective here is a passage from a recent William Buckley article.

... The presidential endorsement is, after all, political dutifulness. Memory recalls a huge rally of conservatives at Garden City, Long Island, in 1962. The speaker was their hero, Sen. Barry Goldwater, whose nomination for president was the heart's desire of the 2,000 persons present. The enemy, in those days, was Sen. Jacob Javits, resented routinely because he was a political liberal, but despised because he was a Republican. There is no fury like that felt by the priestly caste against impostors. Everyone was waiting to hear the answer to the question: Senator Goldwater, do you endorse the re-election of Senator Javits?

"Yes." Stunned silence. Then: "I am chairman of the Republican senatorial campaign committee. Who do you think I favor?..."

Come on PA! I'm (hopefully) moving back to that fair state later this year and would sincerely like to vote for a TRUE conservative Republican for senate in November!

If a demo wanted to vote for Specter, he/she would have to have their party registration changed last month.

No, I know that. But I did read here that Specter had appealed for cross-overs. I don't recall how long ago -- maybe long enough (I assume Specter knows when they'd have to do it by). A couple of people checked with election clerks and were told there was no evidence anyone was doing it. (I guess I made it sound too much in the present.)

So you don't like Santorum because he endorsed Specter, and because he endorsed Specter you're going to vote for Toomey?

The actual chain of events.

I decided I would not vote for Spectre. I verified I could vote for Toomey. Santorum came out for Spectre. I decided I could not trust a Santorum endorsement. I received a recorded phone call from Santorum in the AG race and ignored the name. I received a second such call and remembered the name of Corbett. I heard some negative ads run by Corbett's campaign and decided I would not want him for AG. I verified the issues and voted.

I would trust Rick (for now) with an important vote in the Senate, but his endorsements are an empty noise for me.

And if he couldn't, having a junior Dim from PA would be preferable to a Senior RINO like Spectre. Spectre would likely be the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, which would finally turn our Republic into the Oligarchy it is becoming.

I saw this quoted on here yesterday, equally out of context, here is Buckley's summation;
But GOP voters in Pennsylvania have the opportunity to forgive Bush, and vote for Toomey.

His point was that people should not turn on Bush just because he supported the wrong candidate. Conservatives support Toomey.

I think either candidate will have their hands full defeating Hoeffel. I also think that voting either for or against the president will be a much stronger draw to get people to the polls in November than the senate race. IOW, if dems come out to vote, it will be because of the presidential race, not the senate one. I don't think Toomey's presence on the ballot in Nov. will affect that.

I read Buckley's column the way you did.

Forgive both Bush and Santorum and vote for Toomey.

(But don't trust any endorsements from Bush or Santorum in the primary.)

Pro-life. Pro-gun. He differs from Corbett in he wants to eliminate parol for violent convicts, and Corbett says he is 'unsure' and wants to 'study' the matter further.

Additionally, Castor is very popular in a very Democrat part of the state and will be a better general election candidate.
