The General Assembly is poised for a possible breakthrough in the 105-day standoff over taxes and spending and votes today on a $979 million revenue plan that freezes the popular car-tax-relief program and raises the sales tax by a half-cent.

Washington Post article, highlighting criticism from some House Democrats:

Key Va. Panel Votes to Cap Car Tax Relief

"Brian J. Moran of Alexandria, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said that more than a half-dozen Democratic delegates from Northern Virginia believe that freezing the car tax hurts their constituents and that the traditional formula for distributing the new tax revenue favors poor, rural parts of the state.

Several said they represent more than enough votes in the 100-member House to defeat the bill, raising the prospect that legislators from Warner's party might doom his legacy proposal."

The Senate passed their bill (with some minor revisions). Then sent it to the House who went into recess (to caucus, etc.). Apparently the vote in the Senate was something like 32-7.

I want to see that list.

"Then sent it to the House who went into recess (to caucus, etc.)."

What to do, what to do - oh woe is me. Must be a lot of hand-wringing in that caucus - not to mention arm twisting. This should be interesting. I'm a little surprised the Senate didn't press harder with their advantage, given that the House had already caved. Although I had heard they wanted to make sure they still had the "renegade 17" with them. Time will tell.

They're back in. But the fight ain't over. Delegate Marshall is saying that the car tax cap is not germane to the bill and is unconstitutional...

He is arguing that they should reject that. Not sure if he means the whole bill.

We're not done yet.

Well, Old Dominion FReepers, we've got at least 17 RINO Delegates who need to be targeted fer political extinction in November '05. Put it on yer "Things to do" list fer the autumn after next!!

"This is acceptable in my mind," said Del. Robert Hurt of Pittsylvania County, one of 17 breakaway Republicans. "I hope this will bring the compromise that I believe all Virginians want."

I guess this clueless elitist missed the Nov 02 elections where we Virginians sent the tax increases down to embarassing defeats.

The Pilot's editorial this morning is a bit late, but they apparently got most of what they wanted.......

Overall, the compromise of tax increases, decreases and adjustments now on the table will get Virginia moving forward again. If the package can survive the rest of the legislative gauntlet, the last 100 days of chaos and uncertainty will be capped with remarkable achievement. Virginians will be able to say, well done.

A welcome thaw in the budget freeze

Oh PULEEEEEEEEZZE

So, you want us to have an all-Demoncrap legislature? That would certainly keep the lid on taxes going forward! Maybe I just don't understand.

IMHO, the time to send a message is in the primaries/caucuses. Trying to send a message in the general election sends Klintoons to the statehouse/White House. Yeah, that worked really well.

"IMHO, the time to send a message is in the primaries/caucuses."

My bad, that's what I meant...get rid of the RINOs in the primaries next summer, then expand the GOP majority in both the House and Senate next November.

Good catch, Mr. Pain...MUD

You have 16. Delegate May (R-Loudoun) has already announced that he's running for the Lieutenant Governor nomination next year, so his seat Delegate seat will be open.

Put it on yer "Things to do" list fer the autumn after next!!

Hate to tell ya, but autumn after next is way too late. You need to find challengers ASAP if they're going to mount effective campaigns in the primaries next spring.
