JERUSALEM: Israeli military officials on Monday said they believe Mahmoud Zahar, a surgeon and prominent Hamas hard-liner, is the new leader of the Islamic militant group in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas has refused to reveal the name of the man chosen to replace Abdel Aziz Rantisi, the Hamas leader killed in an airstrike on April 17.
In Gaza violence on Monday, a 14-year-old boy was shot in the back by Israeli army fire and died, Palestinian medical workers said. The boy was in a group of youths who had climbed some sand dunes to watch the soldiers.
Military officials said soldiers used non-lethal means to disperse a demonstration.
Hamas on Monday denied the Israeli claims regarding Zahar, calling it a ploy to draw out information about the group's murky leadership structure. The group's leaders in Gaza have been in hiding since the Hamas founder, Sheik Ahmed Yassin, was assassinated by Israel on March 22. Israel has said the group's entire leadership is marked for death.

I hope he has a good life insurance plan and finished his last will and testament. He may also wish to pick out his cemetery plot in advance, perhaps one with a nice view of Rantissi and Yassin.

The Israeli government today announced a new olive branch of cooperation. It said, "The new leader of Hamas is invited to immediately detonated his own personal exploding vest and smear himself all over the walls of his mud hut, or we will do it for him." It seems the IDF knows exactly who it is and where he spends most of his time and learned it from a very well connected source employed by CNN.

This is so typical of the shoddy reporting you see on AP today.
Note that AP passes on the information from the "Palestinian medical workers" that the boy was shot in the back, completely without support. Pali medical workers would never lie, after all. They would not transport arms in ambulances either, would they?
The notion that the boy was just climbing a sand-dune for a better view is passed along without any sourcing at all. Does the AP have any basis for saying so, or is this the same Pali medical workers speaking again?
The Israeli military authorities tell a different story, which AP passes along, with no attempt to reconcile the two. Was the boy a bystander or a demonstrator? Were the means lethal or non-lethal? Did the boys throw rocks, or were they just sitting there innocently?
The AP doesn't say. It is almost as if they accept that pro-Pallie folks will read it one way and pro-Israeli folks will read it another, and the AP has no responsibility to get the facts right.
The only fact in this story is that a 14-year-old is dead. The rest is fluff and the circumstances of his death are left to the imagination or prejudices of the reader.
