The coal policy of Kerry involves investing in technology to make coal burn cleaner as one way to help keep coal mining jobs in America.

Yeah, sure, that'll get people to burn more coal. You gonna pay for the scrubbers, Mr. Kerry? 'Cause if'n you ain't, there will still not be a financial incentive to switch to coal. (We already have scrubber technology, by the way. A lot people opt for oil or gas because it is cheaper than installing all of the clap trap that you have to have to burn coal. Oil and gas are a lot easier to transport and to burn. Until the price goes up quite a bit on those two commodities, companies won't switch back to coal. But the price of oil and gas has been going up. If the prices go up enough, some companies may switch to coal and then Kerry can claim it was the government supporting development of scrubber technology that made it all possible. What a bunch of baloney.)

After Kerry was long gone (and good riddance!), area Republicans held a rally in downtown Wheeling. It's good to see at least some union steel workers "get it":

WHEELING - During a rally Monday union members told about 250 supporters of President Bush that the president's record - especially when it comes to steel tariffs - shows he is a stronger supporter of Ohio Valley industry and working people than his Democratic opponent, Sen. John Kerry.

The rally followed a visit to Wheeling earlier Monday by Kerry. Scott Reed, chairman of the Ohio County Republican Executive Committee, told the crowd at the Ramada Plaza City Center Hotel that former President Bill Clinton did not keep his promises to help the steel industry.
"President Bush made the decision to stand up for steel ... if this had been done six years ago, we would never have been in this mess in the first place," Reed said.

Rick Casini, a member of the Independent Steelworkers Union at Weirton Steel, said the company's recently-approved agreement to have its assets purchased by ISG would not have happened without the steel tariffs put in place by Bush. Even though the tariffs were lifted 18 months early, they saved the domestic steel industry nonetheless, he said.

"He put the tariffs on and gave us time to consolidate," Casini said. "What's wrong with that?"

Although labor unions are known to support Democratic candidates, he said, there are many rank-and-file members who believe Bush has helped them and believe in the quality of his character.

"They're there - they just need some encouragement," Casini said.

Mike Engle, another long-time Weirton Steel employee and ISU member, agreed that Bush has proven his commitment to the Ohio Valley.

"Without those tariffs, Weirton Steel would not be here now," Engle said. "He did that probably against the opinions of most people in his party because he did what he thought was right."

Kerry's record, he said, includes support for environmental regulations that hurt Ohio Valley industries, especially coal.

"He's in a league with those radical environmental people," Engle said.

He also believes many union members want to vote for Bush.

"I would encourage my union brothers and sisters out there to vote for the person who has actually helped you - not for the ones that are just giving you rhetoric and not doing anything," he said.

Engle also said he believes Bush's pro-life stance and his position against gay marriage is consistent with the values of Ohio Valley residents.

West Virginia Sen. Andy McKenzie, R-Ohio, said over his eight years in the state Senate, he has received endorsements from a number of labor unions including the ISU and the AFL-CIO.

"Labor unions are an important part of American society because they stand up for working people - that's what George Bush does," McKenzie said.

McKenzie also discussed Kerry's record when it comes to the coal industry.

"Do you realize every opportunity he has had, he has voted against the American coal company," McKenzie said. "If Kerry has his way, those jobs are gone."

Kerry's high poll numbers is a function of most people not getting a good look at him yet.

The more they see of him the less they like.

Thanks so much for posting!! I really wish I could have went, being from Wheeling. I am glad so many people showed up that were for Bush.

I noticed in today's paper, there is a poll question:

Did the United Mine Workers make the right choice in endorsing Sen. John Kerry?

The poll results are interesting, aren't they? I saw the Independent Steelworkers Union president Mark Glyptis at the White Palace, but I'm glad he hasn't yet said he's supporting Kerry. The guys at Weirton Steel - or any steel plant - would be foolish to do so (although I saw various USWA officials at the event, too). The funniest thing was Brooke County Democrat chair John Martino giving us the finger with both hands, even though we had at least six little children in our group. A real class act!

Yes, I've been trying to follow the polls in the Intelligencer (we get the morning paper at my office). Seems that, IMO, mostly they go conservative. Hopefully, that is a good sign.

As for Brooke County Democrat chair John Martino, maybe you should do a letter to the editor? That just goes to show the mentality of liberals in this country! Anything goes, huh?

I hope I can make it to a Bush rally if/when he visits Wheeling. It would be a blast!

The publishers of the Intelligencer and News-Register do take a conservative stance, pretty much (I write for them parttime). I don't know why they endorsed Manchin for governor, but their editorials of the past two days denouncing Kerry for being such a liar have been worth the price of the paper!

Nearly 1,000 people from across the Ohio Valley turned out this morning at Wheeling Park's White Palace to listen to Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry....

And about 10% of those were there to PROTEST Kerry! GREAT JOB!
