[history]
A lot of students grouse about a low grade in school, but Brandy Hurd is making a federal case out of it.
Hurd, a straight-A eighth-grader and a top athlete in her class, is suing a teacher and the Island Union Elementary School District in Lemoore for what a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Fresno says was an unfair C in physical education last year.

A bit torn on this. My first instinct was to say "What a nerd. So you didn't get an A, boohoo". But after reading the whole article, I'm not sure. The fact that another teacher overheard this teacher call the student a "b", and also heard the teacher state that she does grade African-Americans "different", just smacks of racism.

As Willie Sutton would say......Last year, nearly seven years after he sued Fresno County and former reserve Deputy Sheriff Bill Richardson for false arrest and other claims, Hurd settled his case for about $700,000, including about $250,000 in attorney's fees.
Exactly what I thought after reading the article.

The other teacher apparently didn't hear the PE teacher state that she graded African-Americans differntly. That is something alleged in the lawsuit.

What I meant is, according to the article, the lawsuit doesn't claim the other teacher overheard the remarks about race-based grading, just the "b----" remark.

Pretty astute for an eighth grader, why since she is so knowledgeable of our system and knows how to use it, isn't she at least deserving of input to our system? Say enough to warrant at least a 1/4 vote in our elections? /sarcasm

A teacher called a student a "bitch"??????That's terrible and uncalled for!
The teacher should have refrained from such language, and used a little PC at the same time, and called her a "dog" instead. ; )

I failed PE one semester. They had this silly rule about grades only refected by suiting out.

I had a cousin who had to go to summer school because she failed PE! My best friend never graduated from high school because he failed P.E. Golf in this instance.
He has a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and over 30 patents.

So how did he get to college without a HS diploma? This was in the 60's, before computers.
College admission was in the spring of senior year of HS, just like now, but final grades were mailed to the colleges. Somehow, they didn't figure this out until he had been there for 2 years, and by then he was one of the top few students.
They decided to let it slide.
Remember when the whole counrty ran on the principle of doing the right thing instead of blindly following the rules? There was none of the current "zero-tolerance" thinking.

Interesting story... He must be a real character.
