April 22, 2004 -- A Florida-based arms company is at the center of the international probe into a New York-bound ship seized in Italy while laden with thousands of Kalashnikov assault rifles, The Post has learned.

The AK-47s were apparently bound for Vermont.

"We know al Qaeda training manuals have encouraged terrorists to obtain assault weapons in the United States," she said. "

Personally I find this very troubling. It is yet another sign that AlQuida wants war on our soil. If this cache was caught, how many have slipped thru? We need to start profiling and weeding out potential terror cells here at home, and soon!

The weapons' bayonets were still affixed to them, as were cartridges that can hold up to 30 rounds, they said.

Cartridges that can hold up to 30 rounds? Who hired this genius?

The AK-47s had been tampered with so they couldn't be rapidly fired, but the modification was one that could easily have been reversed, authorities said.

Tampered with? How about legally manufactured that way. Sounds like a shipment of Romanian WASR or SAR semi-automatic rifles which are perfectly legal for sale in the United States.

The assault weapons are a favorite with terrorists: Usama bin Laden sported one in the now-infamous footage of him taken after 9/11.

Bin Laden had a Soviet Krinkov....not a semi-auto Romanian AK clone.

AK-47s also have been the weapon of choice for some infamous military-minded wackos, such as the teens who shot up Columbine HS in Littleton, Colo., in 1999.

Wow.....this guy is just making it up as he goes along. There were no AK-47 type rifles used in that shooting. The "reporter" has a serious agenda going here.

The startling seizure prompted Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Nassau) to call for a renewal of the 1994 federal ban on assault weapons, which is slated to expire Sept. 13.

This 'cache' of legal firearms was illegally confiscated by Italian Fascists. You're "troubled"? Hmmm.....let us know when you're "deeply troubled".

Take a deep breath. Century sells sport utility rifles. This was likely a legal shipment that some customs official got all excited over, for no good reason. Or (dons tinfoil beanie) it has happened as impetus to renew the Clinton AWB.

AKs are cheaper just about anywhere in the world, than they are here. No one comes here to buy AKs.

weeding out terrorists here:

what is up with our cia and fbi ?
every day spain, italy, germany, indonesia et el
are busting terrorist cells. we know they are here
why arent we knocking heads ? if the patriot act is so intrusive then we should be seeing reports here of
positive results but nothing.
its time to forget political correctness for a bit and
offend some bad guts.

My local news ran film of the guns, all AK-47's. It appeared to be a few thousand of them, and they stated the port was VT, but the final destination was Georgia.

Thanks. It's different than the link at the top of the thread.

I'm really surprised at the slant coming from the NYP.

Or (dons tinfoil beanie) it has happened as impetus to renew the Clinton AWB. AKs are cheaper just about anywhere in the world, than they are here. No one comes here to buy AKs.

Oddly enough, that was my first thought- "The startling seizure prompted Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Nassau) to call for a renewal of the 1994 federal ban on assault weapons, which is slated to expire Sept. 13."

If they want another Israel, but with three hundred million million residents, I say "bring it on."
