"We don't know what the motive was behind the theft,"
Two bucks plus per gallon might be it.

It was empty, though, per last paragraph.
Imagine an empty tank, then fill about 2/3 with fertilizer (amonium nitrate) and 1/3 diesel fuel. Big Boom potential.
Imagine an empty tank, filled with toxic substance, dumped it major city water supply.
Empty tanked truck has a lot of potential.

Get a big tanker - fill it with gas - and dump it into the sewers - then light the match and see what happens - it could be a real mess in large cities. I AM NOT SAYING THAT THIS SHOULD HAPPEN (Is my disclaimer big enough?)

Dump trucks, garbage trucks, even school buses are subject to theft.
IMO, every vehicle capable of carrying flammable product ought to have a tracking device.

Sure - lets put a transponder in all of the vehicles which transport large amounts of explosive type material. Then we can develop a satellite system to track everyone of them. We can also have a new Federal Agency assigned to the FAA for ground control - so that in a few years the system will be overloaded and in need of a major overhaul.
I'm sorry if this seems pissy, but our government has already gotten to big, and I'm afraid that it will continue to get bigger until it implodes and we have to pick up the pieces. I'd rather try to fix it before it implodes, but it seems to have taken on a life of it's own, and will become a black hole before it can be fixed.

"tracking device"
Yes .. and I'm shocked that this has not already been installed in vehicles which have such a deadly potential.
What bothers me .. why was the truck left unlocked with a key in it .. or am I assuming too much? Would it be that easy to break into a truck and "hot wire" it?

By some odd coincidence, an idiot with no idea how to drive a tanker, has managed to jam one under an interstate bridge in Evansville, Ind.
Tanker truck stuck under Evansville overpass
Associated Press
April 22, 2004
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- A Mack truck hauling a 10-foot diameter oil tank became stuck beneath a highway overpass today, forcing the rerouting of morning rush-hour traffic.
The top of the oil tank became stuck under the Interstate 64 overpass about 7:30 a.m. as the truck was traveling on U.S. 41. Police removed the truck two hours later, but lanes of traffic remained closed for hours as the bridge was inspected for damage.
The truck driver, Jerre Hout, 62, of Noble, Ill., was cited for not having proper registration and for operating an oversize vehicle, said Sgt. Todd Ringle of Indiana State Police. He also received five other citations, Ringle said.
The truck was impounded by authorities, he said.

Doesn't sound like a true tanker, more like a flatbed trailer hauling a 10' diameter tank. At 14+ feet, no wonder he jammed it under a bridge.
FWIW, my wives family is from Evansville.

Nice to have an expert on the thread, thanks for the comment. What do you think should be done about putting tracking devices on trucks? Do you see drawbacks?
