The university, as an institution, has been a critical partner in the mission of the Catholic Church since the founding the first great universities at Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, and Bologna. John Carroll, America's first Catholic bishop, and founder of Americas first university in Georgetown in 1789, was driven by the vision of securing the future of American Catholicism through education. Today, more than ever, society needs strong Catholic leadership inside and outside the Church and looks to the university as a foundational establishment to cultivate future leadership.
Like John Carroll, the founders of the New Catholic University (NCU), under formation in San Diego, seek to create an institution of higher learning that positions the students growth in the knowledge and truth of the Catholic faith and spirituality at the focal point of all learning. NCU seeks to cultivate a new breed of visible Catholic leaders who are ready for a radical living out and bold proclamation of the gospel in a world marked by religious apathy and cultural pluralism. New Catholic University will strive to be a great Catholic university, one that does not compromise in its principles and seeks excellence in all that it does.
New Catholic University will build on three frequently-articulated desires of committed Catholic youth and their parents today: a college experience that is deeply spiritual and uncompromisingly Catholic; an education that develops the students intellectual and creative talents, provides them with strong academic credentials, and prepares them to compete in an unpredictable global economy; and the cultivation in the students of the motivation and confidence to become innovators, leaders and entrepreneurs.
New Catholic University is intentionally a niche institution. New Catholic University will foster a contagious entrepreneurial environment, and will be a catalyst for sparking new ideas. Its singular goal will be to produce graduates ready to lead and innovate in specific influential and dynamic industry clusters. New Catholic University plans to offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Business (with a focus on Product Development and Management); Technology (with an initial focus on Computer Engineering and Computer Science); and in Communications Media (with a focus on Entertainment Media and Journalism). Pending legal approvals and fundraising, New Catholic University aims to admit its first students in the fall of 2005. Future plans include offering MBA degrees and building an on-campus film production studio.
New Catholic University faculty will be experienced industry professionals, skilled at building companies and charged with mentoring and guiding NCU students to do the same. Students will benefit from having an on-campus incubator to help convert their Senior Thesis business plans into commercially relevant products and services. NCU expects most graduates to end up working for companies spun out from the campus incubator. NCU will present the students with significant opportunities to interact with an extensive network of successful entrepreneurs and to participate in the presentation of their business ideas to venture capitalists.
The founders at New Catholic University are reaching out to committed Catholics to help build a university that will produce leaders in film, video gaming, multimedia, journalism, the internet, and technology. Solidly Catholic leaders and future role models who know Jesus Christ will strengthen our Church by their witness and better society by their example. New Catholic University will loudly proclaim its institutional fidelity to the Church and unwavering adherence to Ex Corde Ecclesiae. NCU's most difficult and exciting challenge will be, with the enlightenment and guidance of the Holy Spirit, to influence the growth of students who will in the future hold leadership positions. The future of our Church can only be radically altered by how we prepare the students of today the future is being made now.
