Fighting around Fallujah a Marine sniper's 'dream'

FALLUJAH, Iraq - Taking a short breather Friday, the 21-year-old Marine corporal explained what it was like to practice his lethal skill in the battle for this city.

"It's a sniper's dream," he said. "You can go anywhere, and there are so many ways to fire at the enemy without him knowing where you are."

The role of snipers has become a significant tactic for Marines in this "Sunni Triangle" city. Marine experts say Fallujah is among the most "target-rich" battlefields for snipers since the World War II battle for Stalingrad, during which German and Russian snipers dueled for months.

In negotiations aimed at ending the standoff in the city, the insurgents have demanded that the Marines pull back their snipers.

A shaky truce exists between the Marines who surround the city and the fighters within the circle.

But the cease-fire allows the Marines to carry out defensive operations within the city, which, among other things, they define as allowing fire on insurgents who display weapons, break the curfew or move their forces toward U.S. troops.

I can't speak for any branch of service except the Marine Corps, but I suspect all branches are the same in that respect.

The goal is always the same - killing the enemy - whether it's by changing a track on an M1 Abrams or treating a shrapnel wound on a squad leader's arm.
If he has earned his globe and anchor, his duty, FIRST, is to kill the enemy by whatever means given to him.

Long Range Reconnaissance (Recon) Patrol.

Basically, groups of 3-8 men, often with some "indig" (ingenious personal, ie "locals") with them. Idea was to helicopter deep into Indian Country, with little regard for foolish things like international borders, gather intel on enemy movements, call in artillery and air strikes on them, scare them in their own rear areas, and when caught, run, pray and often die, in that order.

The unit that is most "noted" for this activity was "MAC-SOG," short for Military Assistance Command - Studies and Observation Group. The term Studies and Observation Group was used to make it sound innocuous and confuse anyone hearing it.

Most LRRPers worked in northern and northwest areas, near (and often over) Cambodian and Laotian borders.

Down in III Corps, SLRRPS (Short Little Ridiculous Recon Patrols) idea was to catch PAVN and hard corps VC units moving from Fishhook area down toward Saigon.

When US forces first OFFICIALLY entered Cambodia in '70, a guy I know once claimed "I was the first officer off the first chopper to touch down in Cambodia." Another guy, from SOG, piped up. "Yeah, it's true. He was. I was in the treeline watching him!"

Thanks to the U.S. Armed Forces that he so despises, he was able to grow up in a Germany not controlled by the Nazis or by the Soviets. So, he does not now have to woory about his papers being in order.

You know, I remember my husband talking about Cambodia. He was honorably discharged in '71 and was in Nam, and I guess possibly Cambodia, 12 months of '70-71.

I didn't know him then. We got married in '76. The whole time we were married, he always made it a point that we know Vietnamese and Cambodian immigrants. My son wound up being an Asian Studies major, speciallizing in VietNam. His language ability has faded a bit, but at one time he was quite good. He was also the only non-Asian holding officer positions in the Vietnamese student club at Michigan. He was even voted president, but decided to be co-president w/a Vietnamese kid because it looked so weird for a non-Vietnamese to be head of the club!

I don't work in radio, but I love it. From all kindsa talk (including BBC and NPR as well as Rush and at one time Stern), to classic radio shows like Fibber McGee, to music of all types (rap isn't music).

Point of order . . .

At the time of Hippocrates (and right up into 18th century England) the physicians and the surgeons were distinct groups and in a great rivalry. Hence the Hippocratic oath not to "poach" in "chirurgeons'" territory.

I sure wouldn't have wanted one of those geniuses in London around 1650 or so to be "cutting" on me "for the stone" - the only quasi-abdominal surgery they could do without a 100 percent mortality rate . . . although good old Pepys survived it TWICE . . .

Yes. We did learn.

We learned that when men such as the Nazis pose a threat to the world, the time to deal with them militarily is in the early stages (in the case of Hitler, when he renounced the Versaille Treaty) instead of waiting until they cause the deaths of 40 million people.

All you Germans have learned from the 20th Century is to die by the millions when the German cause was the enslavement of Europe and to now cower like children when the cause involves fighting against those who would enslave others.

We learned that the Nazis that fought to enslave Europe needed killing in the 1940's and we learned that the Baathists who are now fighting to re-ensl;ave Iraq need killing now.
