If I told you what I really think about the so-called mainstream media, FR would turn bluer than cobalt. To paraphrase a line from the late and great Fox series "Firefly," "There is a special place in hell reserved for members of the news media...It includes child molesters, and people who don't turn off their cell phones in movie theaters."

The news media is beyond accountability.Somewhere along the way and I don't know the precise history of this the First Amendment clause guaranteeing a free press was twisted to virtually eliminate effective libel and slander laws, thereby making it all-but-impossible to successfully sue or criminally prosecute reporters, newspapers, and other news companies. Not 100% impossible, but nearly so.
To the extent the general public has any knowledge of this problem at all, they probably think this only impacts "public" people. But few are aware of just how easy it is to become a public person in the eyes of our pathetic libel/slander laws. If you're on TV even once, or in the newspapers once, you can be considered a public person.
I understand the need to protect our press freedoms, but the system is skewed waaaay too far over in favor of the media. The effect is that they are the only truly unaccountable business under our system of criminal and civil law. Unlike other companies, if their product is harmful, or fraudulent, or defective, they can't be held accountable. They can ride roughshod over the lives of any one of us, and lie, cheat, steal, trespass, and even commit treason and sedition in the process. Yet they are untouchable.
It's one of the great injustices in our nation, in my opinion. Not even Great Britain, grandmother of our founding principles, has so little check on media power.

"Do not fear the enemy, for your enemy can only take your life. It is far better that you fear the media, for they will steal your HONOR. That awful power, the public opinion of a nation, is created in America by a horde of ignorant, self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditching and shoemaking and fetched up in journalism on their way to the poorhouse."-~Mark Twain~

Thanks AuntB. There are no two people better than Mark Twain, and Winston Churchill, to give proper perspective.

At least in Great Britain, the news consumer knows which are the conservative, which are the liberal, and which are the middle-of-the-road media outlets. In this country, the media lies, claiming to be "objective"....at least they have before this election year.

Did anyone catch Limbaugh today? Apparently he said something about Gorelick working at DOD before she went to Justice, and gutting some special ops programs while at DOD. Anyone heard anything about that?

Kerry makes me ill! How is he going to pay for that? Tell them to join the military and get their college paid for IMO. He is really pandering to college students but from what I can tell he is getting no traction. The ones in college are too smart for his pandering.

Wonderful Twain quote. Perhaps he'd have trouble imagining it in his day, but the media has actually deteriorated since then. As a member of the media, himself, he looked and saw, "a horde of ignorant, self-complacent simpletons." But at least the reporters of Twain's time were mostly working stiffs who came from the middle-to-lower classes. Also in Twain's era, there was genuine, raucous competition among multiple newspapers, pamphleteers and the like in most cities, each of which made no pretense of objectivity. Rather, having a forceful um, colorful point of vew was a huge selling point.
In our time, we have puffed-up, preening, glossy, genteel, self-important, mostly college-educated, wealthy elites posing as the voice of the common man. Roughly 90% of them are political Leftists but the limousine kind. As for the Leftist propaganda they pass off as news, the majority of them know precisely what they are doing. I cut them zero slack because they deserve none.

As an aside, I recently read a biography of Twain, er, Clemens. When he came out to Carson City, NV, with his brother, who had been appointed by the Lincoln Administration to serve in an assistant capacity to the territorial governor, Twain got a job for the newspaper in Virginia City. One thing he'd do is when a wagon train came through town on its way to California, he'd interview the members of the party, get down their names, where they came from, where they were headed, and the like. And after they left town, he'd write a story about how, say, two days out of Virginia City, they'd all been killed by an Indian raid...or some such variation. All fictitious, of course, just to sell newspapers.
