London-AP -- Head-banging heavy metal music may be o-k to listen to while driving -- but stay away from some of the older classical stuff.
Britain's R-A-C Foundation has named Richard Wagner's (VAHG'-nurz) fast-paced "Ride of the Valkyries" (VAL'-keer-eez) as the top tune not to listen to while behind the wheel -- because it says research shows loud music can cause accidents.
Three modern songs also made the top five, including "Firestarter" by the Prodigy.
The foundation also provided a top-five list of songs that can be played safely while driving -- though it cautions the volume should be kept down.
That list includes the Norah Jones hit "Come Away with Me."

Our teenage son learned everything that he now knows about opera from Bugs Bunny cartoons. Barber of Seville being his all-time favorite.

No one's mentioned the opening guitar rift from "Crazy Train" ...

I'll have to try Carmina Burana on some of the twisties, although it is really battle music for me. Have you looked at the english translation of this? Don't think it is battle music. More like orgy music. :)

"Just Gottdammerung."
I had to go look it up, the complete translation would be:
einfach Gottdammerung

I have a friend who shares a mutual affection for Enya. But he says he dare not listen while driving because it would cause him to fall asleep at the wheel!

Lee Harvey, you are a madman. When you stole that cow? And your friend tried to make it with the cow? I wanna party with you, cowboy. The two of us together - forget it. :)

Well, there are others. I saw Carmina Burana on this thread (other than O Fortuna, there is another movement that's dangerous) and the William Tell Overture, but there are few others like The Battle on the Ice from Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky and the overture to the Marriage of Figaro (Mozart) that could be just as dangerous. Even the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth when it gets rolling, can be pretty fast. Oh, and a good chunck of Carmen, specifically the scene in the bar from the second act.

I love that song! I keep that CD in the truck just for high speed driving, although now that I drive a pickup I rarely break 95. :)

If I want to tool thru the mountains on a trip, there is little to beat the Celtic Music of Silly Wizard, turned way up.Woo-hoo! I LOVE Silly Wizard. I cried when Johnny Cunningham passed away a little while back.
Also good for cranking way up: Wolfstone (they ROCK), Old Blind Dogs, and Lunasa. Also Slainte Mhath, but they're kind of an acquired taste.

That's about the ONLY Wagner piece that'd cause problems, I must say. I've seen Gotterdamurung (sp?) on video several times, and though the story is pretty cool, there is an awful lot of lonnnngggg slllowwwwwwww dialog. Hence the need for peppy themes!
Bluegrass and fast Celtic music is what gets me in trouble. Easy to speed up to the tempo of the songs...which isn't always good.

I highly recommend not listening to the Overture to Tristan and Isolde while driving depressed.
