Owens switches Senate endorsement to Coors

Republican Gov. Bill Owens today withdrew his endorsement of conservative former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer in Colorado's wild U.S. Senate race and threw his support behind Peter Coors, the deep-pocketed political novice who runs the Coors beer empire.

Coors is expected to formally announce his candidacy on Tuesday.

Schaffer said Owens told him the bad news in a brief telephone call.

"He said he was sorry and I told him that I forgive him," Schaffer said. He said Owens listed his complaints, but Schaffer refused to disclose what was said.

It's hard to escape the conclusion that Peter Coors is the stronger candidate.

Ditto. I'm feeling rather desperate now. I'll endorse whoever has the best chance of winning. I want the GOP to keep control of the Senate after the 2004 elections.

I wouldn't say it's a pro-homosexual company. I think that Peter is a pragmatist and he knows that all kinds of people drink beer.

Coors serves on the board of directors for U.S. Bancorp Inc., H.J. Heinz Co. and the Energy Corp. of America.

I hate to disagree, but I would rather vote for someone who has a business that DOES outsource than one that doesn't. Who is the world would want someone with the mentality of a union stooge in the United States Senate? Competition is good.

You're absolutely right. We shouldn't make the *perfect* the enemy of the good--and there is so much good the Coors family has done for the conservative cause over the years. Those pining for a "perfect" conservative candidate will have no cause to complain if their "perfect" conservative candidate ends up facing off against a "moderate" liberal Dem in Colorado--and the Dems end up in control of the U.S. Senate as a result. Pete Coors is the GOP dream candidate for this one--and I hope he gets the nomination.

Sounds like someone just shattered your nirvana. Of course they CAN do whatever they want as a private company. The question is should someone who runs a company with that type of philosophy be worthy of someone's vote for the US Senate. I'm more than comfortable saying NO NO NO.

And as for your comment about them being on the dole, someone needs to get their head out of the sand. The average HOMO couple has a combined household income that would make your wife blush.

Well-said, and absolutely right. I don't even live in Colorado (right next door), but once Mr. Coors get's his Senate campaign committee up and running, I'm going to send a modest donation. Keeping the Dims from taking charge of *any* branch of government is simply too important to risk in the current world environment. They (The Dims) are simply not up to it.
