Barbara (L) and Jenna Bush, the daughters of U.S. President George W Bush, walk together from the Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas, April 11, 2004 after President Bush (news - web sites) and members of his family visited with soldiers wounded in Iraq (news - web sites). Bush awarded 10 purple hearts to troops recovering in the hospital, after attending an Easter Sunday Church service at a chapel within the army base in central Texas.

Apparently you do not have the ability to discriminate between railing on someone for being indecent and someone making the legitimate observation that the outfits they wore to church on Easter Sunday were trashy.
If you think that those outfits were in good taste, you are welcome to your opinion, flawed as it is.
It is trashy to wear a beat up old jeans jacket over a nice white Easter dress, but it is not indecent. It is trashy to wear a bright green dress with spaghetti straps to church on Easter Sunday, but it is not indecent.
It was not that their clothing was obscene, it was that it was unseemly.
I hope this helps to clear things up for you.

Oh my, we are being arch aren't we? When one is exposed, one retreats to archness and patronizing statements. You are a fraud my dear. And a woman to boot.

no, she would not wear hose with sandals...it's all I can do to keep it sandals, and not flip-flops. but one of the reasons I have this argument is that her mother was so controlling.
Now, I have her, she won't talk or do anything with her mother, and she is chomping at the bit. Now, it's ok, I can handle it, and she is never immodest in her dress, but there is a dress code, and she can't be too casual.
I think two things.
1. The Bush girls look fine. I mean that in BOTH ways.
2. They are adults. And anyone that thinks they can control 22-year olds NOW because "they have the gold" had better prepare for not spending much time with their grandchildren. Nuff said.

The Etiquette Queen is flat-out wrong. One does not wear hose with open-toed shoes. It's as big a sin as, say, wearing white shoes after Labor Day.

Demetrius is a woman. I will bet anything. He is no man. Look at his posts, they positively reek of catty woman. Down to the last comment on "gauche". He is a ringer or is it wringer?I agree.

Grandma and Grandpa Bush are paying for their education; they pay for all of the grandchildrens' education.
The girls are gorgeous, their shoes are to die for. No matter what they wore, there would be those who would criticize. If they had worn a demure shift, some would say where were their hats and gloves. Others would criticize their jewelry. Still others would opine that they should have worn a nice spring suit. And others would say their pantyhose were a shade too light, making their legs look "sexy" (horrors!)
I have seen lots of folks in church all dressed appropriately but know them to be "sluts", drunks, whatever. I have a feeling Hillary even dressed appropriately for church in her college years.

mom and dad have been largely absent over the last several years running one our our largest states, and the country. I suspect Laura's been keeping pretty much up with them, though, and due to her intense desire to keep the twins' lives private, we just don't hear of it. When W was Texas' governor, and the girls were under age, Laura was able to have a much higher level of involvement in the girls' lives due to proximity, and I am sure, due to her intense love of and desire to train her daughters. Same with pop.
I'm glad they look normal, and not all punk'd out...
Yes. I am too.
In the end, when youthful ways go by the wayside, I think these two girls will turn out to be marvelous women contributing to America's good at an age when that is appropriate for them. I read Barbara Bush's Reflections after the White House and was impressed with how the grandparents have had a hand in forming the "grands." It has been said by family that Jenna is sort of Barbara's (mom's) revenge on W because she is so much like him, pushing the limits, etc.
The First Couple has been pretty wise to shield the girls from a lot of publicity, judging by this thread. ;-) I certainly would not have wanted my child feeding the media frenzy during the teen / college years!

"Oh good grief. It is not "designed to draw attention to her rear". If she wanted to draw attention to her rear, I can guarantee you there are lots of things to wear that would do a far better job."
There is more than one way to skin a cat. Perhaps she did not want to draw as much attention to her rear as those other ways to which you are referring to and to that I can only say thank heavens for small favors.
I am glad the girls went to church and I am glad that they visited the troops. That was very good and I am proud of them for doing so. I still wish they had worn more tasteful outfits.
To: Howlin
So when did something being "done all the time" make it correct? That's not how we do things in Houston. Omitting slips, and bras and underwear the omission of which I should not be able to detect, is "done all the time" and is still grossly inappropriate.

You are equally as welcome to your opinion as deeply flawed as it is.
I have to agree with some of the other posters..........you are one catty piece of work, and remind me of the old busybodies that would stand around after Churrch every Sunday nitpicking about the rest of the congregation.

"the sweater is tied around her waist, untied it would hang below her waist."
True, but since it is tied around her waist, it does not hang below her waist. It is, however, just about the ugliest sweater I have ever seen.

"beastly cold north wind made all of Texas shiver this Easter."
It felt good to me and besides I saved money by not having to run the air conditioner all day and night.
Of course I am in the Houston area, so it was probably not as cold down here as it was up in the Temple area.
