Barbara (L) and Jenna Bush, the daughters of U.S. President George W Bush, walk together from the Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas, April 11, 2004 after President Bush (news - web sites) and members of his family visited with soldiers wounded in Iraq (news - web sites). Bush awarded 10 purple hearts to troops recovering in the hospital, after attending an Easter Sunday Church service at a chapel within the army base in central Texas.

I am a conservative Republican now, but I was a liberal Democrat back in the day.
Living life and seeing how things are instead of how liberal professors told me things were, turned me into a conservative well to the right of Bush.
I would like to see all illegal immigrants deported, the military budget increased, taxes cut further, and social spending cut to the bone.
I will vote for Bush, however, because while he is not as conservative as I am, he is much better than the alternative.
Check out the posts I have made over time in this forum if you think I am a liberal and I am sure that you will see that I am quite conservative, including being a social conservative, which also includes thinking that people should dress conservatively.
The jean jacket would be fine if Barbara were wearing it on the Yale campus and Jenna's dress would be fine if she was out dancing at a bar on a Saturday night, but the outfits were not appropriate for going to Easter Sunday services.
That's my story, and I sticking to it.

The golden rule. He who pays the gold, sets the rules. I have a daughter who is a junior at Rice. She dresses demurely, behaves like a perfect young lady, and is getting excellent grades while majoring in Chemical Engineering.
The secret to having well behaved teenagers is to develop a good report with them while they are still young.
My daughter was home schooled from the third grade until she began attending community college full time at the age of fifteen.
Number One here, these "girls" are 22 years old, no longer teenagers. The are grown women.
Number 2 When your daughter gets out from under your thumb you better pray hard that she doesn't make up for lost time if you know what I mean. I have seen it happen so many times. These girls whose parents were so strict on them while they were teenagers that when they got any freedom whatsoever they went completely wild and did stuff that you could only imagine.

Not the most important thing in the world, just my two cents.
I am glad my daughter does not dress like they do. I think my wife for that.

Was it a treat for the soldiers to be visited by the President and his lovely daughters? Yes
Were the clothes appropriate? They were dressed for Sunday services in dresses. The jean jacket was probably for a sudden chill and the Jenna's sweater covered her as well.
Should they have worn slips? Yes. But they also could have forgotten.
Were the shoes appropriate? Yes. Why wouldn't they be? They weren't tennis shoes. They were heels to wear with dresses.
Do I think it's low class and disgusting for people who claim to be of such high caliber to talk about rumors of Jenna being a falling down drunk, and that could be how she scraped her knee? Absolutely
Ask yourself this. Would a soldier injured fighting for freedom care if the gals forgot their slips and that their heels were too high, or were they happy to see the president and his family pay their respects for our wounded in battle?
Then get on your knees and thank God that we live in the greatest country on earth and try not to scrape your knees on the way back up.

"UT is the Berkeley of Texas."
True, but that is still well to the right of the Berkeley of California.
I am well aware that there are plenty of liberals in Austin and at the University of Texas, but still, it is Texas and there are at least some conservatives.
Remember that University of Texas Law Professor who got into trouble for telling the truth about affirmative action admits at the law school? No law professor at Yale or Boalt would have made those remarks, and if they did, the professor would no longer be employed by the law school, but at Texas the old boy is still working there.
You don't really think that UT is more liberal than Yale, do you?

You must have read something into my posts that wasn't there... I have nothing but praise for them... I offered no criticism of them whatsoever. I think they're doing our country a wonderful service.

The jean jacket looks trashy as does the spaghetti strapped dress. It is too revealing for church, IMHO. The jean jacket may be the only moderate weight top Barbara had at the ranch since she was most likely visiting from school for Easter. As for Jenna's spaghetti strap dress; she's wearing a long sleeved wrap style sweater that looks as though, in church and out of the wind, would be a modest cover-up. With the wind blowing, it looks like it just blew off her shoulders.
Cut them some slack!

I think the soldiers would prefer that they 'forgot' their slips and wore high heels.

I apologize, I meant to remove your name from the TO: spot and just leave it blank. It was not meant for you at all, you posted a positive thread that was turned into a negative.

There are much worse places they could have been. They are adults now, not that it seems to matter to you.
Are you in one of the more fundamentalist churches, because they are Methodist which may be a tad more casual than the more legalistic churches. That has a lot to do with the perception of what is appropriate for church than you realize.
To: gdc61
I was just pointing out that just because somehing is "IN" does not mean that it is appropriate for the daughters of a Republican President to wear when going to church on Easter Sunday or to visit wounded troops.
I am sorry that it went over your head.

She dresses demurely, behaves like a perfect young lady, and is getting excellent grades while majoring in Chemical Engineering how nice for you. just because their attire doesn't meet with your approval does not remotely mean they are not dressed appropriately. i didn't care for either of the dresses, but i would not rail on them for being indecent.

No, just sort of free association. One thought leading to another, as it were.
