As most of you are aware, we've recently received several copyright complaints. In the last few weeks, we've received complaints from the SJ Mercury News, Independent (UK), SF Chronicle and The Boston Globe. Just a couple days ago the Post-Gazette send a cease and desist notice and yesterday I heard from the Tribune-Review.
Tonight, I got a call from Amy and there were two more registered letters at our PO Box. The McClatchy News (Sacramento Bee) and USAToday are now added to the list of publications that have complained about copyright violations.
Well, folks, the handwriting is on the wall. The complaints are now coming in faster than I can respond to them. John is currently in the process of writing programs to search out and automatically excerpt all existing threads from these sources.
I think we're gonna have to go to excerpt and link for all news sources very soon unless we have written permission on file.
That's just it, weegee.
*Proving* what was & wasn't inside their pinsized heads would be a SOB to pull off.
There's no one who could seriously say they'd tell the truth; under oath or otherwise.
The Liberal-Socialists -- and ESPECIALLY the sycophant quisling print mediots -- have to be the consummate *experts* at getting their stories straight so they can present one hellova united front.
We all -- you & I -- have witnessed this disgraceful distortion of "right" & "honor" by this monstrous ilk many times in the past whether it was wacking Bork, Gingrich, Livingstone, Lott, Tripp; or, protecting one of their own ala Clintigula, his hag, the august senator/KKK Grand Kleazle of W.VA. & on and on.
This ilk is *insideous*.
There's simply no doubt in my military mind the largest single threat to not only our democracy but to to the very survival of our Republic itself, is the maniacs running the lamestream -- be it print or broadcast -- media today, 2004.
I'm not kidding one bit either, they're that dangerous so catching 'em up would be alot like trying to catch a greased eel.
"A copyright must be inforced when you first discover the infraction, not years later as an election approaches."
I don't doubt your asserion for one instant but, again.
How'd someone/body go about proving any *one* of these rags knew beforehand FR had been C&Ping [their] -- putrid -- material?
Think they'd admit to knowing all along?
(If you do -- which I wouldn't believe -- you've something to learn about these horrible miscreants.)
I gotta wonder if we could even make a serious case against 'em IF we were to locate an article appearing in their own rag, detailing the FR/WP/LAP settlement.
It's gotten that nuts.
The "Law" has become so twisted and distorted over the past decade along with some kind of an incestuous relationship between the mediots & the law -- thanks in no small part to Clintigula, himself -- that achieving justice in any measure is nearly an impossiblity.
Which sooner or later?
...we're all going to have to admit exists.

--- Snip out usual Krugman's drivel ----
I know: Mr. Clinton doesn't deserve all or even most of the credit for the good times on his watch, and Mr. Bush doesn't deserve all the blame for the bad times on his.
---- Snip out even more of usual Krugman's drivel ---
"Again, if a copyright lawyer could show that a number of FR-aware publications knew about FR's 'copyright violations' but did nothing until prompted into action by an instigator, then they may have lost their 'right' to cry foul."That's just it, weegee.

Certainly a number of complaining websites had staffers who were aware of the website www.freerepublic.com. Certainly a number of editors at those websites were aware that Free Republic existed for more reasons (and had more content) than merely discussing the freeping of online polls.
I've tried to include relevant keywords in threads when I find them (including frinthenews == FR In The News). I cannot find good search terms to find some of the "complaining sites" articles about FR from YEARS ago.
I've seen both posts from people hosting images on their servers and who just get a bump in traffic (all coming from FR).
Certainly we are all aware of cases like Margaret Cho's website operator complaining about FR sending them visitors and email (emails that do not indicate a "FReeper" sent it; FReepmail doesn't go to outside sites).
Certainly at larger companies there is someone reviewing just where their traffic comes from. Such data can even be used to solicit potential advertisers.
If these media companies could be forced to reveal their records, they would very likely show just how much they did know and for how long.
A few years back, FreeRepublic's owner/operator Jim Robinson was taken to court by the Washington Post and LA Times for copyright infringement. Many people considered this a bogus lawsuit. The court said we FReepers had to stop posting full articles from the WP&LAT`s websites.
In that context, this is another effort by certain publications to stifle the publics right to fair use of the written word, for education and discussion purposes only. Not to mention an effort to silence FreeRepublic.
When I clicked on the link to some known news source for which I didn't have on FR file the needed login info, I'd get a screen (that you guys wrote) that asked me to either provide one-time the needed login info, or select the option to "Don't ask me again on this site, as I can handle my own login, thank-you kindly".
On on another My Account page I could list, update, delete my login info for each supported news web site.
I suspect that what I'm suggesting here is too difficult, because it seems to involve automating responses to ever changing login screens of dozens of news web sites. Life is too short for that crap. But I'm no web meister, so perhaps that part isn't such a pain.
And the other gotcha that comes to mind -- if some computer in sunny Freeper California (or wherever your FR server is) logs in for me, how to we transfer that login info to my nice little PC? Having a javascript do the login for me right off my PC seems to be pushing javascript further than even the Sun marketing rep would consider practical. Can a javascript transfer the cookie?
Free Republic, LLC is a non-commercial ... company...
Free Republic is not a for profit commercial enterprise in the sense of a traditional business ...
How about a system that ties comments into the particular piece of text being commented upon, which would make the comments look like footnotes. More and more of the original would appear progressively as comments cite them. That way, no more of the original ever appears than is demonstrated necessary for a First Amendment purpose. Some care would have to be taken that frivolous cites aren't used simply to build up the amount of original, but abuse complaints could handle that.
*Precisely*.
It ain't no accident it happens like that, either.
It's a well planned & executed *strategy* by the Liberal-Socialist forces to destroy this magnificent Republic.
The whole thing's no more complicated than that when ya strip away all the *onion's* layers so one may see the core, my friend.
...it's high time people realize it too, don'tcha think?
You sound like you [really] know your stuff and, based upon that assumption I'd say you might just be correct in your assertions.
But you'd also want to seek out people who're minimally as knowledgable as yourself if you were to seriously go after these dispicable Liberal-Socialist monsters running the rags, today.
And if you ever did decide to persue 'em, just remember one thing as you do, OK?
The shiesters working for you, unless they're doing their work *gratis*?
Work by the hour & man-oh-man at $300+ per hour?
...billing hours always stack up fast. ;^)
Then we won't need their friggin permission to print their leftist/socialists/propogandists views.
But that's just me....
I pray to God you're right, i-a; but, I'm not as *confident* as you.
The general population's been so woefully dumbed-down on subjects like "history," "civics," & how our Republic's government works the elites can pull shit on the dopes all day long & they'll never know & as long as the dopes rely on the Liberal-Socialist quislings in the lamestream I see little -- if any -- hope of things ever getting better.
Between acadamia, law, & the mediots they've a virtual stranglehold on each & every one of us, whether we know it or don't matters not.
Fact is, they do.
"The left is much more cunning than we are...also they are devoid of ethics or honor."
~& that's a fact, jack.
Takes only a minimal amount of research to understand what lengths Uncle Joe Stalin -- & Ho Chi Men, Pol Pot et al ad infinitum -- did to secure their power to understand what lies in store for us in our [very near] future, should these maniacs ever succeed with their scheme of taking over.
That's for damned sure.
"Just watch this election for true ugliness!!"
Yea, sure.
...if my stomach can take it.
