Kerry's Easter Plans Include Catholic Service

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites), a Catholic whose support of abortion rights has prompted some in the Church hierarchy to say they would deny him Communion, will receive the sacrament if he attends Easter Sunday services at Boston's Paulist Center.

As the first Catholic at the top of a major party ticket since John F. Kennedy in 1960, Kerry has opened a new debate over religion and politics.

Frequent visits to Protestant churches have led some to question if he was sidestepping the Communion issue, but aides said the Massachusetts senator would celebrate Easter at a Catholic church, probably the Paulist Center in Boston.

In Kennedy's day, voters were afraid that another senator from Massachusetts might follow papal doctrine too strictly. Now, conservative Catholics are attacking Kerry for not adhering to it closely enough.

His position on abortion reflects that of many of America's 65 million Catholics, most of whom are concentrated in big states with the most electoral votes like California and New York. But they have aroused ire among some influential Church leaders.

A practicing Catholic and a former altar boy, Kerry also supports stem cell research and civil unions -- issues he calls matters of conscience.

"I fully intend to practice my religion separately from what I do with respect to my public life and that's the way it ought to be in America," he told reporters in Ohio this week. "There is a separation of Church and State in America and we have prided ourselves about that all of my lifetime, all of our history."

In February, Archbishop Raymond Burke of St Louis advised Kerry not to "present himself for communion" at any church in the city.

In a speech earlier this week, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago said the "great scandal" of the Democratic Party " is that there's no pro-life caucus."

"A party that historically has been concerned about the weakest among us...doesn't permit any freedom of speech around the question of abortion," he said. "One can say, as I have, that the Democratic party has lost its soul."

The leader of Kerry's Boston diocese, Archbishop Sean O'Malley has urged Catholic elected officials -- without mentioning any by name -- who support abortion rights to abstain from Communion, but has not asked priests to stop offering it.

"Archbishop O'Malley has no public statement as to the questions regarding Sen. Kerry and his Catholicism," said Rev. Christopher Coyne, a spokesman for the archdiocese. "The matter has been brought to his attention and I do not know when or if he will make a public statement on this matter."

Kerry and his wife Teresa are regular worshipers at the Paulist Center not far from their Boston townhouse.

The Paulists are a Catholic religious order like the Jesuits or Dominicans. A mission statement posted on their Web site says: "We are a Catholic community that welcomes all, liberates the voice of each and goes forth to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ."

Coyne said the Paulists were, for the most part, autonomous, but still had to abide by some governance of the archbishop. "For example, he has full authority over them as they administer the sacraments and preach within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston," he said.

Rev. John Ardis, director of the Paulist Center, said the Kerrys had received Communion there and were always welcome to do so. Asked if he had been instructed not to offer Kerry Communion Ardis said: "No. Definitely not. I got a call from them (the archdiocese) an hour ago ... They wanted me to know that the archbishop has not taken a stand and he is free to receive the Eucharist." (Additional reporting by Greg Frost in Boston)

I wonder what "liberates the voice of each" means:

"We are a Catholic community that welcomes all, liberates the voice of each and goes forth to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ."

I'm not a Catholic, but I have the greatest respect for sincere followers of the Catholic teachings. And the greatest disgust towards people like Kerry who pretend to be Catholics and stand ON PRInCIPLE against the moral teachings of the Church.

Here is the e-mail that I just sent to Fr. Ardes at the Paulist Center:

Dear Father Ardis,

For weeks now John Kerry has been trying to influence Catholic voters by touting his faith as a Catholic, while at the same time advocating positions that directly lead to the killing of innocent human life. He has purposely and knowingly removed himself from Communion with the Catholic Church, using the Mass as a political photo op instead of God's gift of salvation. Now, spiting in the face of the Archbishop, faithful Catholics, and Jesus Himself, Senator Kerry plans to present himself to receive the Eucharist while in the state of serious sin, and according to the article I have just read in the news, you plan to assist him in this sacrilege by giving him the Body and Blood of Jesus with full knowledge of his unrepented grave sin.

I encourage you to prayerfully consider your position in the light of the confusion that is presented to Catholics by Mr. Kerry's positions and the sin that is compounded by his sacrilegious act.

Father Ardis address is: johnardis@aol.com

If the Bishop does not make a profound public statement on this he has taken a stand. Catholics should call the Bishop and demand he lead.

The pastor can still refuse to serve him communion.

The Paulist Center is quite liberal. It's the place to go for confession if you spent Saturday night engaged in some semi-heavy petting and be assured that you won't get hollered at and humiliated by the priest.

I thought he was a Baptist? The only time he's ever seen attending services was while fundraising at black churches. When is he scheduled to attend services at the local mosque? He is a big muslim supporter after all. Baathist?

Killing babies is a bit more serious than petting.

Arguably one can blame the priests and the bishop, but I really don't think it's appropriate for people to picket an Easter service. Perhaps the priests should be communion police, but I don't think the general public should be communion police. Plus it will look bad and the liberals will milk the "mean-spirited" orthodox for all it's worth.

And what, pray tell, would that position be? Is he for it or against it? His voting record indicates that he's for abortion of every type. We Catholics should be appalled that someone in a legislative position should vote against what we are taught. Kerry is a Catholic fraud!

I believe the Paulists are best known in Boston for having given Boston Globe columnist and notorious Catholic-basher James Carroll, once a Paulist priest, his . . . uh . . . "theological" training. In other words, I imagine most of them think abortion is the 8th sacrament.

Dang him!!! That's where I'm going to mass for Easter. Perhaps I'll wear my patented glare in his direction (the one that says because my mother told me not to say bad things to people, I'm just going to let me eyes do the talking) and Bush-Gore button conspicously on my purse or jacket. Anyway, my very Catholic and conservative mother would get a kick out the whole thing..

I just ordered a T-shirt and some bumper stickers saying
Catholics Against Kerry

All Catholic Churches should be reinforcing the Church's teaching on abortion and reminding their parishoners that they should especially not support anyone who is in favor of partial birth abortion.

So, some anonymous official from the Chancery called to say that it was OK to receive communion? Typical.

Very sad. When I came into the Church I was conditionally baptized in the Paulist Center in Boston, many years ago. (There was no real question that I had already been validly baptized as an Episcopalian when I was an infant--proper form, matter, and intention, but at that time it was thought best to make certain.) The Paulists have really gone around the bend since then.

Did any of the Catholics around the thread notice last Sunday that Kerry took communion in a non catholic church? I thought that was against the Catholic teaching....non Catholics are not to take communion in Catholic churches...

Kerry is CINO ( Catholic in name only)

"the archbishop has not taken a stand and he is free to receive the Eucharist."

It think this should be ammended to "the archbishop is a coward and is afraid to take a stand so Kerry is free to receive the Eucahrist even though he is pro-abortion and the whole world knows it. "

Let's face. The RCC is so damn screwed up it is disgusting. I am totally fed up.

Great Article...I wish the secular media would get it right once and a while about Catholicism.

There is no such thing as a Catholic service, it is a Mass!!

No priest should holler at or humiliate anyone who comes to confession.

Unless, of course, the priest has never sinned himself.

Sounds like Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley of the Archdiocse of Boston needs to hear from many enraged Catholics between now and Easter morning!

Which phone number should we call to vow never to give another penny to any Paulist cause if they choose to participate in this grave scandal?
