Martha Burk takes aim at Augusta again

Martha Burk, who last year picketed the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta in a failed attempt to get the Augusta National Golf Club to accept female members, is going on the offensive again.

The day before the Augusta National Golf Club's official press conference for the Masters Golf Tournament, National Council of Women's Organizations Chairman Burk joined Mehri & Skalet PLLC, the civil rights law firm known for high-profile employment discrimination cases against Texaco and The Coca-Cola Co., to launch the "Women on Wall Street" initiative. This project will investigate allegations of sex discrimination at financial institutions. As part of this initiative, a new web site (www.augustadiscriminates.org) will be launched to collect additional information from women at these firms about possible sex discrimination at financial institutions, beginning with companies with ties to Augusta National.

Initially, the subject of the investigation will be financial firms whose executives are members of the male only golf club, including American Express (Kenneth E. Chenault, chairman and CEO); Bank of America (Kenneth Lewis, CEO; James H. Hance, Jr., vice chairman and chief financial officer); Berkshire Hathaway (Warren E. Buffett, CEO); and Citigroup (Sanford I. Weill, chairman).

"Over the last year, women who work on Wall Street have sent us one message loud and clear: sex discrimination in their firms does not stop at Augusta's gates," Burk alleges. "The clubhouse extends to their firms -- and affects jobs from the entry-level to the executive suites. Women on Wall Street are less likely to receive promotions, equal pay packages, stock option equity or the opportunity to serve on the board of directors."

Before beginning the investigation, Burk is calling on the firms to show they do not discriminate by disclosing the gender breakdown of the 150 top paid employees, distribution of stock options by gender and whether the interview process for board members includes a diverse candidate slate.

This story has not ceased to amuse me. I find it amazing how broadly discrimination has to be defined in order for it to apply to Augusta National. I do not see to many people buying this.

I would really like to see men demand a spot on the LPGA tour (force them to change their rules -- since they explictly ban men). Then force the WNBA to allow men to play. Pretty soon there would be no women in the WNBA.

Sports competitions should be gender neutral. Men are a lot more open to this concept than women. Women discriminate against the male sex all the time. And don't even get me started on Title IX.

I'd like to personally thank Martha Burke for prompting the Masters Committee to look out for their sponsors and refuse their advertising money so that they could broadcast the tournament commerical free. One the other hand, I did use that 2 minutes an hour to refill my drink and use the facilities. Now I can't afford to get up for four hours...dang, she is a b!#%h...

God bless Martha Burk, all her bitching last year earned me the ability to watch the entire Masters uninterrupted by TV commercials.

I sent her a personal email thanking her profusely for her actions. She has done a wonderful thing for a wonderful tournament.

The best part about htis photo is that after all her best womanly nagging she only managed to snag about 11 other hags to protest with her. Obviously she didn't have many sympathetic souls on her side or the streets would have been teeming with upset womenfolk.....

But again, I am eternally grateful to Martha for her actions did induce Hootie to skip ads altogether......what a man!

It's nice to have so much freaking money that you can tell CBS how to run the show (literally) and your sponsors, "We'll handle this one. Why don't you take a couple years off."

The Masters is one of the few things that is still right with this world, and for four days in April, all things are good.
