Sandra Donat had been arrested three times already for drunken driving, so she knew that she would need someone sober to blow into the ignition-lock device on her van before it would start.

She chose her 12-year-old son.

Then Donat piled him and four of her other children - all younger than 10 years old at the time - into the vehicle at 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 20, 2003, and took off for Taco Bell with a beer in hand.

In New Mexico? --- it might be hard to find a sober person to blow into the device.

Just slightly better than the mom who gave booze and gun to her kids and sent them in a rented car to Detroit.

Is that really a widespread problem in NM? I ask because I have a relative with an alcohol problem who lives there.

How did New Mexico get into the story? Wausau and Marathon County are in Wisconsin.

New mexico is attempting to place sobriety ignition devices on all cars in NM and all cars sold in NM.

It will only add cost and get idiots who are drunk to pull stuff like the mom in the story

"The nature of this crime is grotesque," Assistant District Attorney Kurt Klomberg said . . .

Really. A twelve-year-old kid, blowing a car. I can't belive it.

Five People Killed in I-10 Crash

By Rene Romo Journal Southern Bureau

LAS CRUCES— Five people were killed and three others injured in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 south of Las Cruces early Thursday morning.

Brian Bullard, 28, of El Paso, was killed when he drove a black 1993 Jeep Cherokee the wrong way— east— in the westbound lanes of I-10 and collided with two cars south of the state port of entry near Anthony about 2:57 a.m.

State Police spokesman Lt. Jimmy Glascock said that, based on evidence gathered at the scene, it appears that Bullard was driving near the center line of the two westbound lanes when the high-speed collision occurred.

Investigators had not determined Thursday which of two vehicles— a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse carrying three women or a Mitsubishi Galant carrying four people— Bullard's Jeep struck first.

In the Eclipse, two 20-year-old El Pasoans, driver Miriam Quiroz and rear passenger Adriana Barragan, received fatal injuries. The vehicle's front passenger, who police did not identify Thursday, was taken to Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries, Glascock said.

A male passenger and female passenger in the Galant both suffered fatal injuries, Glascock said. The Galant's male driver was transported to Thomason Medical Center in El Paso with undisclosed injuries, and a male passenger who sat in the right rear seat was taken to William Beaumont Army Hospital at Fort Bliss.

Police were to release all the victims' names following notification of next of kin.

Another account I read quoted the State Police officer as saying alcohol is suspected. Toxicology tests are pending. However, in the past 10 years there have been several instances of drunk drivers killing others by driving high speed in the wrong lanes of the interstate. Suggestion to everyone. At night on a divided highway, always drive in the right lane and when you pass treat it as if it was just a two lane highway. Look ahead -- you never know when a DD is coming at you.

New Mexico did not pass the law -- they may try again next year.

I appreciate this article being posted because it shows that a determined drunk will do what he/she must to outwit the device. Just like gun control -- responsible owners will always act responsibly, and the crooks will always have guns. Why infringe on law abiders with these laws that target the wrong people.
