WASHINGTON -- The Senate on Tuesday voted an additional $6 billion for child care for welfare recipients and the working poor as part of a bill to renew the landmark 1996 welfare reform law.

The measure easily won Senate passage, 78-20. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and 30 other Republicans voted for it, but the Bush administration opposes the provision and House Republicans did not include it in the version of the legislation that passed the House last year.

Actually, if the fathers would help support their kids, we wouldn't need all this welfare. Blaming only women for the problem is shortsighted. Both parents need to be taking care of the kids they create.

Of course. But women who seek welfare for children, either out of wedlock or otherwise, should be required to name the father and give his last known location. The state should collect all support from thos e dead-beats or put them in jail. If the woman cant name the daddy - sorry no money.

There are over 400,000 + fathers in jail alreadly for back
child support arrears. According to U.S. Census Records and CDC, and other data/studies done, fathers are killing themselfs in great numbers, I wonder why ???

I'd like to see both parents held responsible for the support and care of the kids THEY created. Obviously, you want the father to be let off the hook. Too bad, because that just means more taxes for you to support their kids.
