Prayer request for Spiff's mother
Email | 31 March 2004 | JackelopeBreeder

Posted on 03/31/2004 11:03:07 AM PST by JackelopeBreeder

I just received an email from our fellow Freeper Spiff. His mother has been hospitalized in Mesa with severe heart problems and the prognosis is not good. She is in ICU now and the docs are trying to get her stabilized for a flight to University Medical Center in Tucson in hopes that they can accomplish something miraculous.

Prayers are needed.

May God hold you and your family close to Him now and give you peace. May He use His awesome healing powers to heal your mother, if that is His will, in Jesus' name.

I'll be praying for your mother, Spiff, that the Lord will strengthen her heart and give her healing. God bless you both.

Hey, this prayer stuff may be working (as if I had any doubt).

My Mom's condition seems to have improved somewhat since yesterday. The Pneumonia, which was going to require a respirator if it got worse, may have improved slightly. They're going to use another method to help the lungs. My Mom's vital signs have improved tremendously over the last 36 hours. Her kidneys are now functioning somewhat after she's been receiving dialysis for a couple of days. Her liver is no worse. Her heart, however, is still a mess, but no worse than it was. She's in better shape now for the flight to UMC in Tucson, and will be in better shape for whatever miracle they might have to offer, but we still can't get a bed in cardiac ICU at UMC. The doctor is livid, my Dad is cracking skulls, and we're looking for options.

Now, not to intentionally add a political slant to this, but UMC is now the only trauma center in southeastern Arizona. TMC had to shut their's down because it was overwhelmed with non-paying illegal aliens. Now, the illegals have only UMC when they're in serious trouble. Anyone, including illegals, coming in to UMC Emergency gets first dibs on beds in ICU if they need them. My Mom is on a "short list" for a bed, but can't get one until everyone in UMC Emergency gets one first. So, there may be an illegal alien or two tying up ICU beds at UMC keeping my Mom from getting the heroic help that she needs right now. People who should not even be here...people who aren't paying for the medical services they are receiving...people who need to be stablized and immediately shipped to Nogales, Sonora, Mexico instead of tying up American hospitals and medical treatment. This is not a situation that I find to be very tolerable right now.

Thanks again to all.

Mom FINALLY got a bed in the UMC Cardiac ICU. They meant to fly her by helicopter from Mesa, but a sudden storm rolled in (that I drove through - man, was that a nasty dust storm) and they grounded all helicopter flights. They made the decision to drive her by ambulance.

They pulled half a gallon of fluid out of her left lung today. Her pneumonia should improve now. Her heart ejection(?) rate is supposed to be 60, was 40 when they admitted her a couple of weeks ago, dropped to 15 causing her move to ICU, but is now back up to 30 today. Her heart is actually healing - that was unexpected. They actually took her off of dialisys now because her kidneys appear to be functioning again.

I'm seeing real miracles happen here, folks. I pulled my 4th nearly all-nighter sitting by her bedside last night and then drove home from Tucson this morning. I'm beyond tired but my Dad can't sit with her all night and then be alert during the day to talk to the doctors and make decisions. And the fun thing is that next week I've got to go to work too. The miracles need to keep on coming as I don't know how long I can keep this up.

Prayers sent for your mother, you and your family.

My father spent a total of 30 days in CICU the last two months from complications following a heart attack right before Thanksgiving. It's amazing what they can do with heart repair today. Dad claims it was all the prayers and love that brought him back home to his family.

Update: My Mom's heart is undergoing continual damage from an unknown source. UMC doctors think it may be a rare genetic disorder called Fabry's disease. If it is, I likely have it as would my children. There's little or nothing they can do to reverse the damage that has been done and she's likely too weak for a heart transplant. Thursday morning they took the defib paddles and stopped her heart in hopes that they would restart it and that it would assume the more normal rhythm. Then they couldn't get it to start beating. They hit her a number of times with the juice but they could only get a few faint heart beats. They cut her neck open right there in her room and threaded wires to her heart and hooked her to an external pacemaker. Once she was half-way stable they took her to the operating room and installed a permanent pacemaker.

Things are not looking good. Prayers are so helpful and we're convinced that we've seen miracles in her continued fight for her life. But, there is not much hope right now. We can hope and pray, but God is in control and his will be done.

My Mom passed away at 5:20am this morning. My Dad said that she went easy. Her suffering is over and she is in a place a whole lot better than us.
