WASHINGTON, March 25 (UPI) -- In a preview of the GOP agenda after the fall election, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, says they are determined to repeal the federal income tax.
Long an advocate of a national sales tax, a confident DeLay told a conference of tax lobbyists Wednesday that House Republicans will have hearings and push the issue in 2005 and 2006.

This is another reason why it is so imperative for Bush to win this election. This simply won't happen if we have President Kerry.

It provides a real impetus to save money like never before. Investments would be tax-free, while every single thing you purchase would have the stigma of 'paying taxes' on it. Purchases would be made much more wisely, and there would be more money available to be saved. And this is only one of the benefits.

I'll take a wait and see attitude on this because W has to get elected for this to have ANY chance. We need to hold the House and Senate for this to have ANY chance.

What would happen to all the tax accountants and attorneys if we went to a national sales tax?

Purchases would be made much more wisely, and there would be more money available to be saved. Why would you care how wisely purchases are made?
The whole purpose of a national sales tax would be to get your money...Do you really think anybody (and I mean anybody) in government would pass a national sales tax to fund their pet projects knowing you're going to not spend, but instead save your money?

The problem is; if we get a national sales tax going we may end up with an income and a sales tax. We have to be very careful with this. Its a bad image problem for Republicans to be in favor of any new taxes. Even if you are trying to abolish the income tax. The Democrats will take it and twist it and make it just another tax source which they are always trying to raise.

What would happen is the IRS would not be needed anymore and the States would simply send the proceeds check to the US Treasurer.. (Or direct deposit would save a 37 cent stamp). The endless arguments of both houses over tax policy would only concern the rate charged for the year.
Life would suddenly become beautiful again.. Oh...the tax people would have to find real jobs, like you and I..

You can do whatever you want with your money. I'm just making the point that, for me, I'd think about the extra tax every time I made a purchase. 5.5% isn't a whole lot, but 17-22% is a great deal more. And yes, I understand the implications on the manufacturing sector.
