I've got a question for all the shootists and 2A guys out there...I've got a young (8 month old) son, and I want "Short Cut" to grow up right as regards firearms. The way I started, and as many of us did, was with toy guns. Many hours of my childhood were spent playing Soldier, Cops-n-robbers, and other games with my friends.

My dad never, however, hesitsted to teach me NEVER to point my toys at other people (well, him and mom, anyway.)

So, what I want to know is, are ANY companies still making toy guns that at least resemble reality? I cannot seem to find any decently-made ones on any toy shelves nowadays, as it appears the Succer Moms have succeeded in removing them from the toy stores.

Surely someone is bucking that trend out there, and wants to make a profit in this unserved market. If anyone has knowledge of one, or knows where to find such things, please respond with links and pics, if possible.

Please also, try to omit the "air-soft" guns, as those are a bit much for a pre-teen kid to handle (not to mention Dear 'ol Dad's wallet).

Oh, you can also use this thread to bash the Left over the head for stealing yet another good piece of childhood away, and by all means, share some of your more fun stories with us as well.

Here is a wood and steel "Davy Crockett" rifle of the type that I have been eyeballing since we rented "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates" for the little one, and he loved it. The plastic noisemakers are great, but there is something about wood and iron that makes a toy gun special... Now I have to convince M0sby!

I must have gone through about a dozen of those Tommy Guns as a kid. As I recall, you could get them (in the 70s) for about 5 bucks at the five and dime.

Bottle? He's already on baby food, and has six teeth which he tries out regularly on his mother and I. he wouldn't take a bottle, anyway. Mama wanted him to get HER milk fresh from the source, and so he has since birth.

That's one of the old-school ones, squirts once for one trigger pull, and usually leaked all over you while you used it.

Well, here's my blowhard best:

While becoming an Eagle Scout, I would help run rifle safety courses by starting with the old Daisy and Crossman air rifles and pistols. Those weapons taught target shooting practices, steady hold, sight picture, the works - all the stuff I aced in the Army.

The old Daisy 880 and Crossman 760 were my A-list pieces. Mechanically tough and reliable, which goes a long way.

For even younger ages, I'd recommend a low-power CO2 pistol. The child gets the idea of weapon weight, aiming techniques, weapon safety, etc.

The Boy, age 6, is getting used to the idea of projectile weapons. He's using my practice bow (30 lb. pull), and I'll introduce him to my crossbow next. The big thiing is, teaching the young'un to respect the weapon as a tool, and not just a toy.

Ahhh, but look who I'm talking to: he'll do fine, and you will, too!

Yeah, but it's a fun thread, and it was getting to be a boring Saturday night.

Anyways, if Mrs. Cut can already be planning his college education, I can certainly look forward to this "daddy-son" stuff.

Nope...hubby and son each put on a Marine Corp's "cover" of choice and shoot each other to "Death" almost nightly... it actually calms the 4 year old down before bed (which is frightening!!)...
The take turns finding bad guys and taking the stuffed animals hostage!
I have been getting "Shot at" since the child was 2~ and he had NO EXPOSURE to any kind of toy guns before that! Then all of a sudden (I am not making this up) he started shooting me with the vacuum cleaner hose and his tooth brush...it was at this point that dad decided to get him a "Real toy gun" so that he could learn the appropriate "rules"! (Most importantly to hide from the neighbor...who pooh Pooh's us...but she only has girls!)

Anyway...fun nights discussion~

Thanks for the confidence, Sarge. It means a lot, especially now as my family and I are enduring a "separated" tour.

I now relish every chance I can find to be a dad and a husband, as I have to take them in all-too-small doses.

It's nights like this that I miss them most, and I guess this thread was one way of doing something about it.

It has raised my spirits immeasurably.
