From correspondents in Lima, Peru
March 27, 2004
AT least 20 people were attacked and bitten by vampire bats as they returned home from work in the jungle community of Mansiche, Peru, a top official at the Ministry of Health said.

Victims panicked, fearing the bats were infected with rabies. But tests on the victims and several of the bats were negative, Suarez said.
The Ministry of Health yesterday launched an information campaign to inform people in the region on rabies prevention and control, Suarez said
