OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A public school suspended nearly all of its sixth-graders for class disruptions and a cafeteria ruckus this week, though many of the students were allowed to return after their parents met with school officials.

Sixteen of the 147 sixth-graders at F.D. Moon Academy were suspended Monday for class disruptions, and 120 students were suspended Wednesday after they picked up cafeteria tables, slammed them to the floor and talked back to faculty, school officials said.

You would think that, but it turns out that people are much more pliable if justice is swift, harsh, and somewhat arbitrary. Random terror is the best sort of terror.

Jarona Knight, whose daughter was suspended, said after the meeting that she wasn't surprised by the students' behavior because some parents in the audience were yelling while school officials talked.

So I guess the apples didn't fall too far from the tree!

And if my 'student' (age 5) acts up, she better look out when the principal--aka Daddy--gets home!

I wouldn't threaten her with the Principal. Make sure the teacher (you) handles it immediately!

BTW, hubby usually calls ME the principal! LOL! If the kids want a day off, he says "Ask the principal!" ;o)

Aren't you worried that your kids won't become "socialized" if you don't send the to public school?

You mean like being able to watch high schoolers having sex on the bus on the way home from school? Great socialization, that!

We have a real problem with socialization with our homeschooled kids. They're is too danged much of it; too many things that they want to do and homeschooled friends with which to do them!

..... The school, a magnet program for mass media communications and technology, is listed by the state as needing improvement because of low test scores.

..........Jarona Knight, whose daughter was suspended, said after the meeting that she wasn't surprised by the students' behavior because some parents in the audience were yelling while school officials talked.

Where to begin......

Ex-New York Times editor admits fault in scandal***Howell Raines has acknowledged for the first time that he should have discovered Jayson Blair's fabrications at the New York Times well before the scandal that cost him his job as executive editor of the paper.

Breaking an eight-month silence with an article in the May issue of the Atlantic Monthly, Raines admits to a "lack of vigilance," writing that if he "had been reading and reacting to the newspaper's published correc-tions as closely and quickly as I should have, I would have noticed Jayson's pattern of playing fast and loose with the facts and made inquiries that would probably have compelled me to start paying attention to a potentially serious problem."

But while acknowledging some problems with his hard-driving management style, Raines rips the paper for its "culture of complaint," "mañana journalism," "clock-punching atmosphere," "management by mendacity," "laissez-faire editorial world," "indifference to competition" and "sloppy work ... accepted as adequate." ***

I've always thought that NBA Player Anfernee Hardaway actually had his name misspelled at birth, when someone really meant to name him Anthony.

I am a public school teacher, high school and I am definitely a Conservative. Believe it or not there are some of us left in public schools and we don't join the NEA.

Lisa, Lisa, Lisa... I myself am a teacher, but I bash teachers all the time

Although you make some EXCELLENT points, I still stand by my statement. I do not see any other profession on these threads that are as maligned as teachers. Yes, you have some ones that are incompetent, apathetic, or just in it for the paycheck....you have that in every profession.

As a parent, when my kids were in school, I made it my business to know what was going on at their school. I did not expect teachers to raise my children, just to educate them. If I saw something that I didn't agree with, I worked to make things better...just didn't sit back and complain about it.

Do you know that in a lot of public districts there are teacher groups that meet before or after school to PRAY for kids?

They may have to do it *off* school grounds. I'm still wondering why at some schools, Muslim students are provided a room during Ramadan (sp?) to say their "prayers", but Christian students aren't afforded the same privilege.

An Akron (Ohio)Public School recently began having their
Parent/Teacher conferences in a local mall in an effort to encourage participation by the parents. Isn't that pathetic?

Journalists and attorneys are attacked more than teachers, but teachers do come in a close third.

I stand corrected! I only malign liberally biased journalists though, which covers about 99% of the profession.

This brings back memories from my school with the food fights. Not that I did any of that stuff.......

As for the talking back....I expect that from 12 years olds knowing how I was.

But slamming the tables? I never did that one. Never was big on destruction of property.

BTW - Got a question for everyone here.

How many here vote in school board elections? I hope the answer is 100%

Our contested races here almost always get less than 10% turnout. Maybe 15% if there is a millage.

I'm one of the 15% or less.
