duct tape n
strong repair and construction tape: a very strong, wide, adhesive tape, typically silver in color, used especially in making temporary repairs to pipes

There are conflicting accounts concerning the history of duct tape. According to Manco, Inc. (maker of Duck™ Brand tape), it was created by Permacell—a division of Johnson and Johnson—during World War II in the 1940s. Other experts claim that the tape product was invented in the 1920s by researchers for the 3M Company, led by Richard Drew. Most accounts agree, however, that Permacell perfected duct tape during the war. Using state of the art technology, their research team developed a process to combine multiple layers of adhesive onto a polyethylene coated cloth backing. Some say this early product was nicknamed "duct tape” because it repelled water like the bird's feathers or because the fabric mesh was made from duck cloth. Regardless of its origin, the military found many uses for duct tape. One of its earliest applications was to hold ammunition boxes together. For this reason, soldiers referred to it as “gun tape.” The Air Force found other uses for the product and duct tape was used to cover gun ports on planes to cut down the air friction during take off. Like many other military products, duct tape was originally colored olive green, but after the war it was changed to the more familiar silver color. Manufacturers began marketing it to household consumers who found a variety of new uses. The tape is easier to use and just as effective as screws and bolts when it comes to holding together the kind of ductwork that is found in new homes with forced-air heating. As the consumer demand grew, marketers began packaging their tapes in a more consumer-friendly fashion. According to Manco, they were the first company to shrink-wrap and label the duct tape so that it could be easily stacked on display shelves. This packaging improvement made it easier for shoppers to distinguish between the different grades. By 1999, Manco was selling approximately 5,900 short tons (5,352 metric tons), or 246,217 mi (396,240 km), of tape each year.

Today's TOPIC:
DUCT TAPE!

What can you use Duct Tape for, you ask????

Plumbing:
Patch that rusted out trap at the bottom of the sink.
Patch pipes in the basement.
Put strips in the bottom for a non-slip bathtub.
Patch the broken toilet tank.

Automotive:
Patch that rust spot at the bottom of the fender. Works best on a silver car.
Patch radiator hoses.
Hold up that window that fell off the track or tape the piece of clear plastic over it.
Patch the seat covers.
Tape the door shut when the latch breaks.
Hold up the falling headliner in that raggedy old car.
Patch that crack in the dashboard padding.
Cover the annoying "check engine" light that won't go out.
Temporarily repair a universal joint (worked for 3 days!)
Patch mufflers and tailpipes (needs frequent replacing).

Auto mechanics:
If you're working on a car and cut yourself, use as a band-aid to keep the grease out.
Wrap that old socket swivel joint so it doesn't flop so much.
NASCAR Racing Pit Crews use it to temporarily patch car bodies.

Computers:
Use as floppy disk labels.
Tape all the holes in the case shut so the fan noise isn't so annoying.
Tape the cables out of the way.
Don't have that special hard drive bracket? Duct tape it.

Around the house:
Bind the hands and legs for bedroom bondage play (NOTE: Do not use as a condom).
Tape an annoying person's mouth shut.
Hang pictures and posters.
Patch the kids wading pool.
Repair split paperback book bindings.
Repair eyeglass frames.
Repair broken sandals
Substitute nail polish remover.
Use for three legged races when you don't have rope (and maybe the victims won't be able to get out of it)
My wife uses it for emergency facelifts.
Tape that old shoe with the sole coming apart in the front. You know, the shoe that looks like it's got a mouth.
Weather-strip windows and doors.
Patch that broken last cigarette in the pack. Hack, hack.
Add to a regular book cover to make it indestructible.
Tape up the kids for an emergency baby sitter.
When doing yard work (shoveling, raking, etc.) put it on the areas likely to blister. Try not to get hair stuck to it.
Use to get dried cat puke out of carpeting.

Today's FEEBLE

YOKE:

If you had purchased $1,000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would be worth $49.00.

With Enron, you would have $16.50 left of the original $1,000.

With Worldcom, you would have less than $5.00 left.

But if you had purchased $ 1,000.00 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock) one year ago, drank all
the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling price, you would have $214.00.

Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.
This is my new retirement program.

I call it my 401-Keg.

It still seems sort of broken to me.

Hey Kathy, those ain't Cubs. Those are Tigers. The Cubs play in Chicago  and won the World Series in 1908, Go Cubs. The Tigers play in Detroit and they have a much better record in baseball during recent decades.

Cubs doubleheader: Ratu nuzzles one of her two baby cubs while keeping an eye on visitors to her cage at Jakarta's Ragunan Zoo. The Bengal tiger gave birth to three cubs on Monday, but only two survived.
