the film is "extremely violent", and that "anyone who watches it will be shaken and possibly terrified by its graphic and bloody scenes."

Not true. I just got back from seeing it. It was more a caricature of violence. It is sort of like those Disney Land rides where you expect to be taken into another world but end up being bored by silly robots.

As far being "too Catholic" goes I do not believe it is Catholic doctrine that Mary Magdalena was the prostitute that Jesus saved from being stoned. The movie clearly indicated that she was.

The scourging could not have been nearly as bad as shown in the movie. There is no such evidence of a violent scourging on the Shroud of Turin. :-)

Actually, the scourging, by all historical accounts, was probably much worse and there IS evidence of scourging on the Shroud.

Also, one of the saints, St. Brigit of Sweden, has a set of prayers given to her by Christ. There are fifteen and they are said each with an Our Father and a Hail Mary. If one says them for a year, the total is 5480, the number of wounds Christ told St. Brigit he received.

the Shroud of Turin.

The Shroud has never been considered as an indesputable holy Relic by the Church. Many people thought that 'oooh, it is one of the tenets of the RCC, once it's gone the entire church of God will crumble.'

Well, it isn't so. The Shroud was considered as holy, but the church has never considered it above dispute -- when it first emerged, many Church leaders disputed its authenticity, but no one had any means of proving it in the middle ages. When Carbon dating came about in the 80s(?) the church willingly offered it for carbon testing to determine once and for all if it was true or not. The carbon dating seemed to admit that it was a medieval item. However, lately those very same carbon findings have been disputed. I'm holding my opinion for now, and that's the church's opinion too.

When Gibson cast Mary who is called Magdalene as the adutress she was an obvious metaphor for all women.
