Spain Will Legalise Gay 'Marriages' - Zapatero
Thu Mar 18, 2004 04:04 PM ET
MADRID (Reuters) - Spain will legalize gay unions, although it may not call them marriages, incoming prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said on Thursday, but he did not set a time-frame for the move.
"We are going to present a bill to set gay unions on the same footing as marriage," he said in an interview on Spain's Telecinco television channel.
"From a semantic point of view marriage may be a concept that does not cover this type of union, but it will have the same legal effects," he added.
During the outgoing center-right government's two terms in office, opposition politicians in mainly Catholic Spain made several attempts to legalize same-sex marriage.
Zapatero, who swept to a surprise victory in general elections on Sunday, made legalizing gay unions one of his campaign pledges.
The Vatican condemns same sex unions.

"Appeasing terrorists and homosexual unions perfect match. "
He might appease the terrorists by withdrawing Spain's troops from Iraq, but he's definitely gonna' tick them off legalizing gay unions.

Hmmm, I wonder if The Passion has opened in Spain yet?
I guess Spain has joined the Post Christian era.

It's very confusing to me. I can barely remember who the "real conservatives" are and who the "true conservatives" are. And now this?

Hmmm. Is this legit? I'm not getting the link to work, and I don't see it listed among stories in the Reuters International News page.

hahah Muslim wackos are going to have a field day with that one... You haven't seen a homophobic violently anti-gay society until you've seen how the Muslim societies treat homosexuals... There is no "coming out" in them...

Everyone keeps emphasizing the 72 virgins.
If I'm not mistaken though, the reference in the Koran is to 100 ever fresh virgins. 72 nubile females and 28 prepubescent little boys.
Sheesh!

As in Massachusetts and other parts of this country, a nominally Catholic population which no longer lives its faith nor takes seriously its baptism, embraces politicians who promote secular, godless agendas. This is a curious business. And it's true in other places too, like Quebec. It's a kind of adolescent rebellion, I guess, but like the rebellions of the 1960s, it can have really terrible consequences.
