I've been saying for years the way to revive and restore the economy ( and it would have headed off these oil price problems as well ) was to-
1- drill for gas & oil like crazy- onshore, offshore, and in Alaska
2- go nuclear for power
3- convert stationary plants to clean coal technology
4- slash taxes and regulations like crazy
Wow- just in time for $3 a gallon gasoline...
Don't forget the knee-jerk reaction of all left wing liberals when it comes to energy--
First, they just lie. They always lie. They start every single argument with lies. They paint ANWR as some pristine wildlife refuge where all of our cute furry animals are sitting in green fields frolicking with each other.
Second, their history of bad predictions that never panned out are never brought up. All of this garbage was brought up decades ago with drilling in Purdhome Bay and the pipeline.
Third, the left demands energy independence but can't get their brains out of the toilet long enough to realize what it will take to do so. They won't allow nuclear, coal digging, oil drilling, offshore rigs, etc. But they instead throw out more decade old arguments about solar power and wind power (unless those windmills are off the coast of Martha's Vineyard and ruin a liberals view).
-more-
When I started driving in 1977 the price of regular was $ 0.58 per gallon.
God forbid we drill Alaska...
Most of the price of a gallon of gas is from taxes. But don't hold your breath waiting for any pol to suggest a cut. I heard three retail clerks talking the other day about how we should tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Like that would fix everything. Sheesh. People are so unbelievably clueless.
The $1.60 or so a gallon we are paying is about 80 cents gas and 80 cents tax. Europeans $4.00 a gallon is 80 cents gas and $3.20 tax.

More idiocy, from idiots:

High gas prices...just another tax! Why doesn't Bush open up the strategic oil reserve?
It wont do much good if we dont have the necessary refining capacity.
Gasoline prices.

Gas jumped a quarter for me since I last filled my tank. I'd ride my motorcycle, but it's 100 degrees every day. I'm officially cutting trips because I don't want to have to fill up.We are certainly cutting back use of our vehicles, and I'm pondering the pros and cons of getting a scooter for short-run errands.
I will tell you quite bluntly that I expected better from the "R"'s when I supported them in the 2000 and 2004 elections-- we should have been drilling offshore, onshore, and in Alaska for the last five years. Not to mention using more clean coal technology, nuclear, geothermal, and more.
High energy costs affect everything-- between this, an immigration, I expect the Republicans to have their heads handed to them in the next elections. And I regret having to say that, but it's the plain truth.
Outside the echo chambers and fever swamps of "non-flyover country" ( DC, NYC, and LA ) there is a vast discontent brewing.

Only silly, and naive people buy hybrids. New Toyota Hybrid=$25,000...fuel economy 38/55 at best..new Chevy Aveo
with A/C $8,500 fuel economy 28/36...do the math. Oh and in larger cars and SUV's the hybrids don't get any better MPG's than their non hybrid counterparts, the Hybrid technology is used to boost performance, not MPG's.

Interesting link, thanks.
When I gassed up the 'Zook a few days ago it was $2.25 a gallon, this morning it's $2.39 or $2.43, depending on where I want to stop. As Winny the Pooh used to say, "Oh, Bother!"

I'm pondering the pros and cons of getting a scooter for short-run errands I browsed the classifieds for scooters recently, too. Houston is no place to drive one for daily use, but for the post office or running out for beer and cigarettes, I would use one.
I wouldn't ride it the 5 miles over to Eaker's house, though. He would laugh too hard and hurt himself.

Governor Bush is coming to the end of his tenure. Senator Martinez is just coming into his seat; he has six years to let everyone see that oil and gas production would be a boon for Florida.

But gas prices have me "thinkin' it over" once again-- my life, or serious injury, versus money... hummm!

Governor Bush is coming to the end of his tenureThe whole "issue" of offshore drilling drives me nuts-- there's less pollution when you drill, and relieve pressure and leaks from oil fields, than when you don't.
It's just sitting there for the taking-- all we need is to turn industry loose and start pumping the stuff.

A fill up for my 83 Camaro (13.5 mpg city) went from around $20 a year ago to around $25 yesterday. When adjusted for inflation, the price of gas is still relatively moderate. Im not about to bitch too much yet.

A gallon of milk is $3.89. Sure glad my SUV doesn't run on milk. LOL
I wonder how many people who bitch about $2.40 a gallon for gas buy fancy bottled water.

And build some new refineries and update the ones we have now. We are already producing at close to 100% of capacity. More crude wont help much without additional refining capacity.
