High gas prices...just another tax! Why doesn't Bush open up the strategic oil reserve?
We are certainly cutting back use of our vehicles, and I'm pondering the pros and cons of getting a scooter for short-run errands.
I will tell you quite bluntly that I expected better from the "R"'s when I supported them in the 2000 and 2004 elections-- we should have been drilling offshore, onshore, and in Alaska for the last five years. Not to mention using more clean coal technology, nuclear, geothermal, and more.
High energy costs affect everything-- between this, an immigration, I expect the Republicans to have their heads handed to them in the next elections. And I regret having to say that, but it's the plain truth.
Outside the echo chambers and fever swamps of "non-flyover country" ( DC, NYC, and LA ) there is a vast discontent brewing.
Only silly, and naive people buy hybrids. New Toyota Hybrid=$25,000...fuel economy 38/55 at best..new Chevy Aveo
with A/C $8,500 fuel economy 28/36...do the math. Oh and in larger cars and SUV's the hybrids don't get any better MPG's than their non hybrid counterparts, the Hybrid technology is used to boost performance, not MPG's.

I browsed the classifieds for scooters recently, too. Houston is no place to drive one for daily use, but for the post office or running out for beer and cigarettes, I would use one.
I wouldn't ride it the 5 miles over to Eaker's house, though. He would laugh too hard and hurt himself.
The Republicans' support for the moratorium off of Florida's Gulf Coast is particularly hard for me to understand. Governor Bush is coming to the end of his tenure. Senator Martinez is just coming into his seat; he has six years to let everyone see that oil and gas production would be a boon for Florida.
I used to ride big bikes-- 74's-- on the street, but the last time I did so, after years of being away from them, so damn many "citizens" in their 4-wheelers kept trying to kill me that I went back to cars and trucks. But gas prices have me "thinkin' it over" once again-- my life, or serious injury, versus money... hummm!
The whole "issue" of offshore drilling drives me nuts-- there's less pollution when you drill, and relieve pressure and leaks from oil fields, than when you don't.
It's just sitting there for the taking-- all we need is to turn industry loose and start pumping the stuff.
A fill up for my ’83 Camaro (13.5 mpg city) went from around $20 a year ago to around $25 yesterday. When adjusted for inflation, the price of gas is still relatively moderate. I’m not about to bitch too much yet.
A gallon of milk is $3.89. Sure glad my SUV doesn't run on milk. LOL
