And what if my heart tells me I don't like ugly people or fat people or redhaired people or smelly people or evil judgmental right wing Christians, and they deserve any misfortune I might dish out to them? How is subjective preferences or desires any sort of sound moral reasoning?

The Heart says give a hungry person fish.

The Mind (and Bible) say teach him to fish.

The former is easy, and gives immediate (temporary) gratification and relief. Both parties are weaker, by this option.

The latter takes character (for both parties), may involve short term difficulties, but yields better long term results. Both parties are stronger, by this option.

The Bible says that "that the Heart is evil and desperately wicked above all things, who can know it?"

Any religious person believes prayer should be balanced by action. So here, in support of the Prayer Team's admirable goals, is a proposed Constitutional Amendment to codify marriage, as they enjoin, on biblical principals:

A. Marriage in the United States shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. (Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5)

B. Marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines, in addition to his wife or wives. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)

C. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. (Deut 22:13-21)

D. Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden. (Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30)

E. Since marriage is for life, neither this constitution nor the constitution of any State, nor any state or federal law, shall be construed to permit divorce. (Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9)

F. If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother's widow or deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine of one shoe. (Gen. 38:6- 10; Deut 25:5-10)

How is subjective preferences or desires any sort of sound moral reasoning?

If you don't know what God has written, Satan has a field day with your life. Fortunately Jesus knew what was written. This truth, revealed below in the scriptures, has been played out throughout all of history. What makes a Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Nero ....

Gen 3:1-5
1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Here is the lie that humanity has swallowed hook, line and sinker. You can be a God and determine right from wrong on your own. Who cares that every human being differs in their view of right and wrong, and death and destruction is the result.

Matt 4:1-11
1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

The heart versus the Bible?

Here are a few passages, directly from the Bible itself upon that subject:
(see http://www.hti.umich.edu/r/rsv/ )

Psalms Chapter 15:
[2] He who walks blamelessly, and does what is right, and speaks truth from his heart;
[3] who does not slander with his tongue, and does no evil to his friend, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor;
[4] in whose eyes a reprobate is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; who swears to his own hurt and does not change;
[5] who does not put out his money at interest, and does not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.
[7] I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.

Psalms, Chapter 19:
[8] the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;

Psalms, Chapter 37:
[31] The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.

Proverbs, Chapter 2:
[10] for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;

Ecclesiastes, Chapter 10:
[2] A wise man's heart inclines him toward the right, but a fool's heart toward the left.

Romans, Chapter 5:
[5] and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

Romans, Chapter 6:
[17] But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,

2 Timothy, Chapter 2:
[22] So shun youthful passions and aim at righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call upon the Lord from a pure heart.

This list of Biblical rules and so on is from a New York Post column on Friday by Liz Smith, who is, I belive, an "out" lesbian. So breakem, you have had your fun reposting this list. So relevent, so meaningful. We're all impressed and everything.

I'm convinced. I'm going to throw away all my linsey-woolsey clothes tonight, to make sure I don't go do hell.

Homosexual Agenda Ping.

Prager makes interesting points. I would have stated some things a little differently. A lot of people don't think so much with their hearts, it's a different set of organs that dominates. But the seat of desires is in the mind, which flickers like a candle in the wind.

A bad anchor in a storm. A civilization which throws away moral absolutes is a ship without a rudder in a storm. Only a matter of time before shipwreck.

Let me know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.

AFAIK grownups who study morality and ethics, whether through the Bible or not, do not patch together those bits of scripture to give advice to moderns. That post was a terrible insult and you should be ashamed of yourself.
