Brinkley: Kerry Faces Questions about Senate Hit Plot

Sunday, Mar. 14, 2004 10:49 PM EST Brinkley: Kerry Faces Questions about Senate Hit Plot

What did Sen. John Kerry know and when did he know it about a plot to assassinate pro-Vietnam war U.S. Senators hatched at a November 1971 Kansas City meeting of the group Vietnam Veterans Against America?

According to presidential biographer Douglas Brinkley, that's the question Sen. Kerry needs to answer. If it turns out that the likely Democratic presidential nominee knew of the treasonous plan, Brinkley says he had an obligation to go to the authorities.

"The question is: did Kerry quit [VVAW] before Kansas City or did he quit after Kansas City," Brinkley told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg. "If he quit after Kansas City, that means he clearly knew about this assassination plot against the Senators and never went to the authorities."

Kerry says he submitted his official letter of resignation to the VVAW just days before the critical Kansas City confab. But two Vietnam veterans who attended the session told the New York Sun on Friday that they remember Kerry was there.

Meanwhile copies of Kerry's resignation letter are nowhere to be found.

Brinkley, whose book "Tour of Duty" chronicles Kerry's Vietnam war exploits, said that the former Navy Lieutenant had an obligation to warn authorities about the frightening plan, telling Malzberg, "Clearly his critics would say, if he had known about it why didn't he report it."

Once put to a vote, the death plot went down to defeat, with Kerry voting in the majority, according to the two witnesses who say he was there.

However, Kerry officials in Florida have recently invited the assassination plan's author, Scott Camil, to join the Senator's campaign, the Sun report claimed.

Brinkley described Camil as "a hothead Vietnam vet who wanted to bring down the U.S. government."

"I'm a little shocked that the Kerry campaign would want him actively working with them in Florida," he told Malzberg.

Once put to a vote, the death plot went down to defeat, with Kerry voting in the majority, according to the two witnesses who say he was there.

This is oddly worded... enough so that the tin-foil types could say that Kerry conceivably could have voted for the assassination, but that the measure fell short of some kind of super-majority vote. This clearly contratsts with other reports that specifically say that Kerry voted against the assassination.

no it is a fact. I also bet the majority of the voters think the same thing. This is a dead-end issue. I cant believe you dont see that.

A "fact" is something that can be proven true. What you are offering is called an "opinion."

You don't speak for "the majority of voters," and you have no idea what they might think when presented with evidence that John Kerry was involved in discussions about murdering Senators. I'll give you *my* opinion, though -- they aren't going to like it much.

But let's talk about you. Why do you consider it so important to discourage people from discussing this particular issue?

The Dems were desperate for anybody but Dean to win the nomination - so they turned to Kerry, but didn't check him out enough...

"Why do you consider it so important to discourage people from discussing this particular issue?"

because it wont work to convince voters Kerry isnt fit to serve. People arent go to believe that a candidate for President is treasonist.

I do know the majority of votesr arent listening to the loony left and didnt listen to all the paranoid accusations the right threw out against Clinton in 1990s.

Aside from hate, why in the world do think this would work?

Aside from hate

Here we go. Discussing this makes one a "Kerry Hater".

Say, raloxk, what do you think of the really trumped up AWOL (shorthand for all stories covering and questioning his Air National Guard service) business that GWB has to endure. There was even an outrageous news article in a Spokane paper yesterday that was base speculation.

Why don't you run over to that thread and voice your umbrage about "Bush haters" pushing that kind of made up garbage.

I agree with you that it's not loony, but I disagree with your belief that it's treason. It's Sedition, and there are specific laws to deal with the failure to report such a plot.

Hiring one of the witnesses to work on the campaign might have been an attempt to bribe him. If so, it didn't work.

Of course, we could find out that these guys change their story once the bright lights get turned on them. We'll see.

You're an American in Australia who thinks the Chinese flag is kewl and is hopeful the right crumbles. Is that you, Kerry?

I don't care if it works.

I care if it's true.

I think the AWOL charge was bogus. You are making the mistake of thinking that because I oppose brining this charge against Kerry out, that I must be a Kerry supporter

He has the Chinese flag on his profile page, yet claims to be an Aussie? Might be true, but why the Chinese flag? Care to explain, raloxk?

This charge, even if true, is so outlandish, the public will never buy it. Seems that conservatives are willing to embrace loony theories about Kerry just as the left embraces loony theories about Bush.

Yeah, the Botox Scandal is such a bigger issue.[/sarcasm]

BTW, what's up with the Chinese flag on your personal page?

OK then.

This is not a loony story. It's apparently well sourced, it's gotten air on Fox News Channel, and there are three witnesses.

The story is not that Kerry voted on the thing, but that he didn't report the plot to authorities.

You might be thinking that the original assassination plot was a loony idea, and you'd be right. But the issue of Kerry's involvement, and the fact that he kept it secret from the FBI, is the story, and that's far from loony.

I wasn't saying Conversatives should bring this up as an issue. I was just curious for my own knowledge.
