ALISO VIEJO, Calif. (AP) - City officials were so concerned about the potentially dangerous properties of dihydrogen monoxide that they considered banning foam cups after they learned the chemical was used in their production.

Then they learned that dihydrogen monoxide - H2O for short - is the scientific term for water.

That website is a real hoot. I have it bookmarked. I show it to unsuspecting visitors from time to time and ask their opinion. I am always amazed at just how many thinks its the real thing. LOL

The paralegal apparently fell victim to one of the many official looking Web sites that have been put up by pranksters to describe dihydrogen monoxide as "an odorless, tasteless chemical" that can be deadly if accidentally inhaled.

Evidently the minimum-IQ paralegal's job was to find things to pass laws about.

Scary.

When you reduce it to powder form, it's invisible and totally weightless.

Let's be fair here. everyone from the city council on down can share the minimal IQ blame, including the city attorney. Ignorance is the norm now and these idiots get elected. The best defense is minimum qualifications to run for office.
I suggest the level of competence in things technical equivalent to a high school graduate in 1955. This is unreasonable? discriminatory? what?

"prank sign: 'Warning! Contains Hydrogen.' He said lots of kids and teachers fell for it."

My favorite prank sign is the very official warning of electrical danger:

"DANGER HIGH RESISTANCE
OVER 1 MILLION OHMS"

When I was a Safety LPO in the Navy, I came across a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for water.

Of course! Dangerous if inhaled. Can cause third-degree burns if encountered in its excited, vaporized state. Can obscure vision if the relative humidity is 100%... Nasty stuff!

If I read this page correctly, this prank has been passed around so much since at least 1995 it appears on many websites. I can envision a city researcher who googled for the production of styrofoam and saw countless references to this insidious compound.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
As an industrial solvent and coolant.
In nuclear power plants.
In the production of styrofoam.
As a fire retardant.
In many forms of cruel animal research.
In the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
As an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.
Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!

The Horror Must Be Stopped! The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

It's Not Too Late! Act NOW to prevent further contamination. Find out more about this dangerous chemical. What you don't know can hurt you and others throughout the world. Send email to no_dhmo@circus.com.

That is part of the problem. DHMO is so cheap that food manufacturers use it in nearly all products. Beer and soda makers are some of the biggest abusers of this cheap chemical. Many of their products are nearly 99% DHMO.

The only thing the government can do is tax DHMO out of existence.

""If you get Styrofoam into the water and it breaks apart, it's virtually impossible to clean up."
