Guardsman Killed in Wreck in Kentucky (My title)
WCHS-TV8 ^ | March 13, 2004 | Press Release

Manchester, KY

Authorities say an Army National Guardsman is dead and another critically injured after their Humvee was hit by a coal truck.

The collision happened last night around 8:15 p.m. (eastern time) on the Hal Rogers Parkway outside Manchester.

National Guard spokesman Phil Miller says a convoy of three Humvees and two buses was traveling westbound from a Guard base in Hazard to a training facility in Artemus near Barbourville. Miller says one of the Humvees was struck by a coal truck traveling in the opposite direction, killing the driver, 43-year-old Specialist Glenn Stanfill of Hazard.

His son, 18-year-old Private Joshua Stanfill of Hazard, was a passenger in the Humvee. He was taken to Memorial Hospital in Manchester and later airlifted to University of Kentucky Medical Center, where a spokesman said he is in fair condition this morning.

State police say the truck driver, 54-year-old Raymond G. Walker of London, lost control around a curve after the load of coal shifted. Walker attempted to regain control, but the truck overturned. Walker was treated and released from the hospital.

Miller says that Glenn Stanfill had joined the Kentucky National Guard in 1995, and Joshua Stanfill begun serving in January. Both were members of Company B, 206th Engineer Battalion.

I was on watch when this happened. I was notified 20 minutes after the incident. Father and son Guardsmen.

Those were some painful phone calls...

I've been to more than my share of coal truck vs motor vehicle collisions as a news photographer, and I can tell you one thing. Get hit by one, and nine times out of ten you will be killed. These 30 ton monsters are death on 18 wheels.

God bless those guys.

You're not kidding.

I just saw the wreck photos. Gruesome wreckage. It'll takes weeks before they restore the Hummer.

To say nothing of the family.

Cold consolation is, it was quick...

Heavenly Father, we return to give You thanks for the service of our brave men and women. We stand the greatest of nations because our citizenry guards our freedoms with their very lives. Thank You for those willing to step forward, out of comfortable lives, into situations of danger ... we are most blessed. Look with greatest compassion on the Stanfill family, whose loss is horrendous. We mourn the passing of husband and father, and pray for complete recovery of an injured son. Thank You, Merciful Father, that this family has been spared the loss of two generations. Comfort the wide circle of fellow Guardsmen who mourn this day ... walk with them in compassionate love, even as they have walked in service for us. In the Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen ...
