"It was no test by terrorists; it was a demonstration."

Yep. There have been others as well. I'm still wondering about the can of anthrax that was discovered in the fall of 2001 down in an extended stay motel/hotel restroom off the main lobby on the mid-Atlantic coast(Virginia?North Carolina?)

01 Apr 2004 10:47:21 GMT Philippine Abu Sayyaf says ready to bomb Manila

By Geert De Clercq

MANILA, April 1 (Reuters) - The Abu Sayyaf Muslim militant group in the Philippines is ready to strike in the capital Manila and has a long line of bombers eager to die, a newspaper on Thursday quoted the group's leader as saying.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said earlier this week her security forces had uncovered an Abu Sayyaf cell in Manila, arresting six men and seizing nearly 40 kg (80 lb) of explosives intended to be used in "Madrid-level" attacks. Relatives of two of the six said on Thursday they had been framed by police.

"Even we were surprised at how many want to be martyrs, the queue is long, we will not run out of bombers," Abu Sayyaf leader Khaddafy Janjalani was quoted as saying in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the country's largest newspaper.

Reporter Arlyn dela Cruz told Reuters that Janjalani, believed by the military to be in hiding in the southern island of Mindanao, had contacted her after the suspected militants were arrested. In 2002, she was held hostage by Muslim rebels for four months and now is one of the few to have access to Abu Sayyaf.

Dela Cruz said the Abu Sayyaf read her a statement that said the group has cells in several Filipino cities, including "your capital city, where our operatives have struck and are ready to strike at any given time".

She said Janjalani admitted one of those arrested was his cousin, said by the government to have beheaded U.S citizen Guillermo Sobero after he was kidnapped from a resort in 2001.

The paper also quoted Abu Soliman, described as Abu Sayyaf's number two, as saying the group demands the release of Muslims detained by the Manila government and the immediate withdrawal of all Christians from Muslim land in the southern Philippines.

"A BIG MISTAKE"

Soliman said the group also demands the release of Muslims detained by the U.S. military in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and the immediate withdrawal of foreigners from the Arabian peninsula.

The Abu Sayyaf group was linked with Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda in the 1990s, but many analysts believe the ties no longer exist, even if the group's demands echo those of al Qaeda.

Soliman was quoted as saying Abu Sayyaf was responsible for planting a bomb in a ferry near Manila in February before it sank, killing more than 100 people. Investigators have not yet established whether a bomb caused the ship to sink.

After gaining notoriety in the early 1990s for a series of bomb attacks in the southern Philippines, the Abu Sayyaf turned to kidnapping for ransom and was denounced as "unIslamic" by other Muslim militant groups.

The government says its numbers have fallen to about 300 from 1,000 four years ago as a result of infighting between different factions and a U.S.-backed military campaign to crush it.

The relatives of Abdulwali Villanueva and Habil Delleosa, two of the six men arrested for alleged involvement with Abu Sayyaf, denied the suspects had any link to the group.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said on Tuesday the men were part of an Abu Sayyaf cell planning an attack such as the one on commuter trains in Madrid three weeks ago.

"His arrest was a big mistake," Villanueva's pregnant wife Hannah told reporters. She denied her husband belonged to any terror group and said explosives found on him had been planted.

Delleosa's sister said he too had been framed.

Yes, June 8th is the transit of Venus. Also, I found some information about the significance of the star symbol of Venus to Muslims:

This is the well-known ideogram found on for instance the flags of Turkey and Pakistan. Positioned in various ways it appears on several of the Islamic countries' national flags. This ideogram is a general symbol for the Islamic faith. It combines the pictorial sign for the waning moon and the sign for the planet Venus as the Morning star.

The five points of the Venus star are in this context said to represent the five pillars of Islam:

Al-Shahadahthe profession of faith. There is no other god but Allah, and Muhammed is his prophet.

As-Salahthe prayer. Five times a day the Muslim kneels and bows to Mecca, putting his forehead to the ground several times and reciting holy prayers.

Az-Zakahthe giving of a small percentage of one's income to help the poor.

As-Siamfasting in the month of Ramadan. During the month Ramadan no food is eaten as long as the sun is over the horizon.

Al-Hadjthe pilgrimage to the holy city, Mecca. Mecca is the birthplace of the Prophet and the location of the Kaaba, a shrine many centuries older than Islam. Kaaba is a square building, the sides of which measure approximately 10 meters and whose height is approximately 15 meters. The pilgrim walks around this building seven times and then kisses a black stone built into the base of one of the walls. This stone is the most holy object a Muslim knows. At least once in his lifetime a believer has to go to Mecca to worship.

From the beginning of the twentieth century this combined crescent and five-pointed star symbol began to appear on other Islamic countries' flags.

Colorado Wildfire Nearly Doubles in Size

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Authorities asked dozens of families to evacuate Thursday as a 2,000-acre wildfire turned toward a subdivision in the foothills of northern Colorado.

The evacuation was voluntary, but fire information officer John Bustos said the blaze was "very active" and was being fed by wind gusting to 35 mph. The fire nearly doubled in size overnight.

It was unclear how many people live in the subdivision, but Bustos said there were about 80 homes in the community west of Fort Collins. Automated warning calls were placed to the homes before dawn.

The fire is an ominous sign of what could be a long, brutal fire season. Colorado remains mired in a drought with no sign of relief.

"This is a bad sign for this time of the year, and we have to take this as a warning that we could have a potentially long year, an extreme year," said Justin Dombrowski, Boulder's wildlands fire manager.

The blaze began Tuesday when a residential yard fire got out of control. It has been fanned by gusty wind and officials said they feared an approaching storm front could cause more problems late Thursday.

Two air tankers and two helicopters, along with four crews totaling 80 people, were available to fight the fire. Two additional helicopters have been ordered.

Meanwhile, in central Arizona a 2,700-acre wildfire was 60 percent contained with forest officials hoping for full containment by Friday. The fire, first spotted on Monday, was not immediately threatening any homes.

Joe Luttman, a fire information officer, said 316 firefighters were working on the wildfire along with two small tankers, 15 engines, two helicopters and two bull dozers. Two elite Hotshot crews were en route.

Southwest of Phoenix, a wildfire burning along the dry bed of the Gila River grew to at least 3,000 acres but was about 70 percent contained. No homes or communities were threatened.

Many observations of arsonists in cars were reported during the fires in southern California last year. It would be easy to overwhelm the firefighting resources by lighting up the western U.S. as summer approaches. As asymmetric warfare goes, it is hard to do better than committing thousands of people in a firefight that starts with single match.

Cyanide Spill in Romanian River
Ecolinks News Service

ROMANIA, April 1, 2004 - Cyanhydric acetone (cyanide) leaked from a chemical plant, near Bucharest, into Somuzul Mare a tributary that leads into the Danube. The spill threatens fish and creates possible health hazards to residents.

The spill, leaving locals unable to use water from the river or wells and unable to eat fish from the river, are accustomed to the restrictions after a similar incident in 2001. The police are investigating the cause of the spill.

The toxic waste leaked from a storage tank at the Metadet chemical plant in the town of Falticeni. The plant has been closed since 2000 but tanks storing chemicals remain. "We estimate that 10 tons of toxic substances leaked into the river," said Ioan Jelev of the Environmental Ministry. Somuzul Mare, a tributary of the Siret River, is located 300 miles north of Bucharest.

Environmental experts are monitoring the situation, making sure the cyanide does not contaminate the Siret River. The team is periodically taking samples downstream, assessing the amount of cyanide in the water. Preliminary data shows a concentration of about 3.0 milligrams per liter, way above the European Union's allowed level of 0.005 milligrams.

Earthquake likely to rock Victoria

Nicholas Read

CanWest News Service

Thursday, April 01, 2004

When it comes to predicting "the big one," scientists still can't tell when a major earthquake will hit. But thanks to research by Simon Fraser University seismologist Andrew Calvert, they may have a better idea of where it might occur.

Using Canadian and American data from 1985, '89 and '98, Calvert, has determined a certain kind of earthquake is likely to occur on either side of southern Vancouver Island near populated areas in Canada and the United States.

"The closer you are to an earthquake, the more damage it's likely to cause," Calvert said. "The fact that we're having earthquakes occur directly below Victoria and Puget Sound means we're sitting in an area of some risk."

His findings are published in this month's edition of Nature.

Calvert determined there is a point on either side of Vancouver Island where one of the two massive tectonic plates that meet off the North American coast dips down below the other. It is thought earthquakes would occur at this so-called inslab point.

Inslab earthquakes happen when one tectonic plate -- in this case, the Juan de Fuca plate -- dips below the other, the North America plate.

The plates are continental and meet at a faultline about 200 kilometres west of Vancouver Island that runs from the northern tip of the island to California.

Jerusalem Holy Site Could Collapse (Due to Feb 11th Quake damage)

JERUSALEM-April 1, 2004 — The outer wall of a hotly contested Jerusalem holy site is in danger of collapse because of damage caused by a recent earthquake, according to a report published Thursday.

At issue is the eastern wall of what is known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, a holy site at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

On Feb. 11, a moderate earthquake hit the region, causing structural damage to some buildings, but no casualties. A report by Israel's Israel's Antiquities Authority warns that the wall is in danger of collapse, said Raanan Gissin, an adviser to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

"The report is warning that this must be taken care of right now so that it won't collapse," said Gissin, who has seen the document.

The fate of the compound is one of the most sensitive issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and tensions have repeatedly led to widespread bloodshed.

Israel has accused the Islamic Trust, the administrator of the holy site, of carrying out renovations without coordinating with Israeli authorities. In one of the largest renovation projects so far, the Islamic Trust renovated underground vaults on the eastern site of the raised platform and turned them into prayer areas.

Muslim officials, in turn, have accused Israel of weakening the structure of the compound by carrying out excavations nearby, a charge Israel denies.

Islamic Trust officials, the Antiquities Authority and police were not available for comment.

Personally, I think that the quake was God's way of saying that it is time for the Al Aqsa Mosque to be dismantled.

Uzbekistan Bomber Kills One, Injures Self

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan - A woman blew herself up in Uzbekistan's central Bukhara region Thursday, killing a man and critically injuring herself, police said.

The blast occurred around 4 p.m. at a two-story apartment building, and police were investigating at the scene, said a duty officer in the Bukhara regional police department who spoke on condition of anonymity.

She said officials were looking at possible links to a string of attacks that have struck Uzbekistan over the past week. Police relased no other details.

The blast occurred in the same area as an explosion at an alleged terrorist bomb workshop that killed 10 people Sunday night. Days of violence followed.

On Thursday, an Uzbek anti-terror official said Thursday was linked to al-Qaida, the first time the Uzbek government has directly accused the terror network headed by Osama bin Laden.

Including the latest explosion, at least 44 people have died in attacks, mostly alleged terrorists.

Ilya Pyagay, the Interior Ministry's deputy anti-terrorism chief, said earlier that operations were continuing to capture suspected terrorists.

"These are Wahhabis who belong to one of the branches of the international al-Qaida terror group," Pyagay told The Associated Press, referring to the strict branch of Islam in which bin Laden was raised. "These are bandits who planned these attacks long in advance."

The unrest is the first to hit this Central Asian nation since it became the United States' key ally in the region after the Sept. 11 attacks. Hundreds of U.S. troops are housed at a military base near the Afghan border.
