Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread 5
CNN ^ | March 12, 2004

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This week's deadly train bombings in Spain will not lead to a rise in the U.S. color-coded terror threat alert system, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said Friday.

"Based on the current intelligence, we have no specific indicators that terrorist groups are considering such an attack in the U.S. in the near term," said department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse.

AP: Madrid Suspect Linked to 9/11 Figure

By ANDREW SELSKY, Associated Press Writer

MADRID, Spain - One of the three Moroccans arrested in the Madrid train bombings was a follower of a suspected al-Qaida member jailed in Spain for allegedly helping plan the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States, according to court documents reviewed by The Associated Press. It was the latest suggestion that Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist group may have been involved in the bombings.

A Sept. 17, 2003 indictment calls Jamal Zougam — arrested in Thursday's attacks — a "follower" of Imad Yarkas, the alleged leader of Spain's al-Qaida cell who was jailed for allegedly helping plan the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington. Yarkas, whose alias is Abu Dahdah, remains in Spanish custody.

The indictment targets Yarkas and 34 others, including bin Laden, for terrorist activities connected to al-Qaida. Zougam, 30, was not indicted.

The indictment, led by Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzon, showed police had searched Zougam's home at least once, turning up a video of mujaheddin fighters in Dagestan, Russia, and telephone numbers of three members of the Madrid al-Qaida cell allegedly led by Yarkas.

Zougam is one of three Moroccans and two Indians arrested in the attacks, which killed 200 people and wounded 1,500. Officials said phones were apparently used as detonators on the 10 bombs that tore through four rush-hour trains.

Spain's El Pais newspaper, citing the interior ministry, reported all three Moroccans have links to Yarkas. Authorities in Morocco said they could not comment on the report.

Zougam was one of thousands of Moroccans put under surveillance by authorities after May terrorist bombings in the coastal city of Casablanca that killed 33 people and 12 bombers, a Moroccan official told AP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The official said he was suspected of ties to international terror groups. There were no formal accusations against him, and the official did not say to which groups Zougam may be linked.

European intelligence agencies were also working Sunday to identify a purported al-Qaida operative who claimed in a videotape that the terror group bombed trains in Madrid to punish Spain's backing of the U.S.-led war against Iraq.

The tape was discovered in a trash bin near Madrid's largest mosque on the eve of elections Sunday, which the ruling conservative party lost in a dramatic upset by the Socialists. An Arabic-speaking man called a Madrid TV station to say the tape was there, Spain's Interior Ministry said.

"You love life and we love death," said the man on the tape, who wore Arab dress and spoke Arabic with a Moroccan accent.

The man said the taped claim of responsibility for the bombing of four commuter trains came from "the military spokesman for al-Qaida in Europe, Abu Dujan al Afghani."

The Interior Ministry released details about its contents, and intelligence agents were trying to identify the man, verify his claims and establish Abu Dujan al Afghani's identity.

"Our reservations about the credibility remain," Spanish Interior Minister Angel Acebes said Sunday.

In France, which has combated Islamic terrorism for years, an intelligence official said the name al Afghani is likely a pseudonym. The name al Afghani could mean the person is of Afghan origin or has some association with the country.

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said it was too early to say if al-Qaida was responsible.

Moroccan security experts arrived in Spain on Sunday to help in the investigation. Morocco's Interior Ministry said the experts were members of a team that has already spent nearly a year working with Spanish officials on the investigation into Casablanca's terror bombings.

The Casablanca bombings were blamed on Salafia Jihadia, a secretive, radical Islamic group suspected of links to al-Qaida.

The other two Moroccan suspects, Mohamed Bekkali, 31, a mechanic, and Mohamed Chaoui, a worker, 34, have no police record at home, the official said.

The Spanish interior minister, however, said three of the suspects had previous records, and one was under investigation for suspected participation in murder. He earlier had said that one suspect might also have connections with Moroccan extremist groups. He gave no further details.

The interior ministry identified the two Indian suspects as Vinay Kohly and Suresh Kumar.

The five were arrested after a cell phone and prepaid card were found in an explosives-filled gym bag on one of the bombed trains.

Friends of the Moroccans said the Madrid store where they worked sold cell phones but they insisted that the men would not have been involved in planning or carrying out the attacks.

"People shouldn't be put in jail for selling cell phones. They are hard workers," said Karim, who works in a phone shop near the now-shuttered store where the arrested Moroccans worked. Karim did not want to give his last name.

Police searched five properties overnight, Acebes said.

Authorities have been tracking Islamic extremist activity in Spain since the mid-1990s and say it was an important staging ground, along with Germany, for the Sept. 11 attacks.

The picture is of Jose Aznar. It could be him on the bull, it could be Bush, it could be Khadafi. I've never seen a full size of the photo.

All the talk about Spain being the bull in what LG2 posted in #371 got me thinking the face could be of Aznar.

News group? Never mind news group...that was in a Senate hearing.

(I was just looking for the senate hearing...but I found this site instead....I'm posting this)

KGB Controls Major Stations in U.S. Government

The above headline (which should send chills all the way down your spine!) is not meant for rhetorical effect, as some of our readers may think. It is taken directly from Jesus' message to Veronica Lueken at the September 7, 1985 Vigil. Jesus prefaced the importance of the revelation He was giving that night by stating: "...no words will be able to contain the exact knowledge that We give you this evening, whether by parable, or symbolicness, or anything that you may call scientific. This, My child and My children, is a direct Message from Heaven.... They [the KGB] are now holding the major stations in your government." That can only mean that the highest members of the U.S. government are secretly KGB agents, people who head the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, etc. And this already while Ronald Reagan was President! Our Lady stated that though he [Reagan] had a good heart, he was unable to see or understand the evil around him. They plan, Jesus asserts, to take over without meeting any resistance: "It is true, My child, that one of the KGB agents who rose to power [Khrushchev] was allowed to appear in the Senate and slam his shoe upon the table and say, 'We will take the United States without firing a shot!' Do not take this lightly, My children, for that is exactly what they are doing."

Earlier in the message that night, Our Lady had stated that "a plan has been built now in Russia to attack the United States and Canada....Your country, the Unites States, and Canada, and most of the nations of the world now, are being lined up by Russia for major strikes." Presumably She is talking about workers' strikes, which would paralyse the government and the country—which may in turn cause the world monetary crash, and then allow the government to declare a state of national emergency. Martial law would then be declared. The KGB agents would then take over the government completely. That is a possible scenario of how they would take over without having to fire a shot.

If Plan A doesn't work, then Plan B may go into effect: staging a confrontation with tthe USA. Our Lady warns that we are under constant surveillance on both shores, " as they go about in the outer waters, sailing and diving, and watching, and coming into your land, keeping with them contact with an organization called the KGB. These agents will provoke the U.S. government into a confrontation with Russia.

Perhaps this is what is going on in Yugoslavia. The latest news on that front is that NATO is planning to enforce an oil embargo at sea. They intend to board, inspect and turn away— by force if necessary—all oil tankers heading for Yugoslavian ports, and this includes Russian ships. Yeltsin has already stated that he will not allow that to happen. What will happen then? Some think that Russia is only bluffing. We shall soon see.

The Ruses of the Russian Bear Don't fall for the tricks and deceits of Russia. The changes there are only cosmetic in nature, designed to fool the West once again about their ambitions to take over the whole world.

Listen to what Our Lady said on June 18, 1992, referring to the so-called "Coup" in 1991, which supposedly buried Communism: "This is a ruse," I repeat again. This is the visage to your country...

Yeltsin: the Man of Sin

"Do you know who is in your nation now? The Man of Sin [Yeltsin]. I counseled you in the past, and I will warn you all for the last time that you have allowed to come in upon your nation a man who is a counterpart, an identical figure to his past successors.

"I tell you now, and I will not tell you again. This is the last time you will receive this counsel.

"As in the past, Lenin; as in the past, Stalin; and Khrushchev; and many others had tried to deceive the United States. They all felt that by trying to ensnare you with delusions of casting aside their communistic aspirations, that they had become as you, a free nation for all.

"I assure you, My children, there is no freedom in Russia. It is all a delusion.

"They seek the monies of the world from the nations of the world. And why do you not learn a lesson? It happened in the time of Lenin; it happened in the time of Stalin. And there you are all on the same road, ready to give billions of monies that should be given to those of your nation and the free nations of the world.

"Do not be deceived, My children, Russia is not free. It is a cosmetic act to delude you. Lenin and Stalin used the same tactics, My children. Why do you not learn from your errors?

"This man, these two men [Yeltsin, Gorbachev] are of the same creed, color, spirituality—or should I say, My children, lack of spirituality. They have a father who is the father of all liars, so what does it make them, My children—Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, Yeltsin, Gorbachev?

"That is the same old plan, My children, and those leaders of your nation are as blind as they were in the past. I tell you for your own good, My children of the United States of America, that once was a nation under God and indivisible, that you will fall! If you do not come out of your slumber now, you will fall!

Storing Armaments in Other Nations

"For it is their plan to subdue you, once they get the billions that they need in aid, to bring up the economy and buy more armaments. They have not disposed of their armaments, My child and My children. They store them in other nations. They have the same goals as their forefathers."

Defector Col. Stanislav Lunev on Russia's Plans If you refuse to believe what Heaven is telling you at Bayside, consider what the highest ranking military intelligence officer ever to have defected from Russia has to say. This happened in 1992 after the so-called "dissolution" of the Soviet Union, when Boris Yeltsin had already come to power. His assignment was to pose as a journalist for the Tass news agency while he spied on the U.S.A.

He has just co-authored a book entitled Through the Eyes of the Enemy: Russia's Highest Ranking Military Defector Reveals Why Russia is More Dangerous than Ever. In his book, he asserts that the Cold War never ended, that the Soviet collapse is part of their deceptive strategy to lull us to sleep; that the Russians are preparing for an all-out nuclear war with the U.S.

First, their plan calls for the special operation forces already here in the U.S. to assassinate all members of Congress, and then destroy key targets like communications facilities, air bases, command centers, etc. They may already have in place nuclear suitcase bombs ready to strike at a moment's notice. Their armed forces are as big and dangerous as before. While we have been foolishly downsizing our military, they have been building more and more advanced nuclear and conventional weapons. Their new Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missiles are said to be more sophisticated than anything we have, and they have just introduced their own version of the stealth bomber.

Underground bunkers the size of cities as large as Washington D.C. are ready for their leaders to take cover in case of enemy retaliation. They plan to move on us with their nuclear and conventional forces only after sabotaging the country from within. If they launched a first strike against us, they probably would destroy most of the country in a very short time.

Dutch arrest Turkish terror suspect
Expatica ^ | September 8, 2003

AMSTERDAM — Military police arrested a Dutch terrorist suspect at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on request of the Turkish authorities on Saturday.

The suspect has been identified as S B and his lawyer, Victor Koppe, said the man has already appeared in court. The man has been remanded in custody and Turkey is expected to submit an extradition request.

The arrested man is a Dutch national and works as a journalist. He lives in Amsterdam and "is politically active", Koppe said. The lawyer added that B is a member of the TDP, a communist-socialist movement, Dutch associated press ANP reported.

Investigation sources said B was suspected of forgery and membership of a terrorist organisation. Turkey claims that he was a highly-placed member of the terrorist group and has a criminal past.

Dutch Lessons
FrontPageMagazine.com ^ | Tuesday, August 12, 2003 | By Lorenzo Vidino and Erick Stakelbeck

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/962442/posts

Legal obstacles are seriously limiting the ability of global authorities to prosecute suspected terrorists. Data from a Dutch case this year reveals that, unless something is done soon, the war on terrorism will run against a legal wall.

In May, a Rotterdam court acquitted 12 men accused of providing material support to an international terrorist organization. The 12 are said to be members of the GSPC, an Islamic extremist group with close ties to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network. Dutch prosecutors had accused the men -- whom they called "the Dutch branch of al Qaeda" -- of selling and smuggling large quantities of drugs, then using the profits to provide support to fellow members of the GSPC network. According to the indictment, the men also provided safe haven and false documents to other extremists and recruited and indoctrinated young Muslims in the Netherlands, preparing them for jihad against the West.

Despite all this, a Rotterdam judge ruled that most of the evidence presented against the men was inadmissible in court. The Dutch legal system requires that police conduct their own investigation. Information gathered by intelligence agencies can be used as a basis for this investigation, but not as evidence in a trial. Dutch prosecutors were extremely disappointed by the ruling.

Prior to their arrest, the 12 men used to congregate at Eindhoven's al Furquan mosque, a facility notorious for its radical activities. For years, the al Furquan mosque hosted seminars on Islamic law organized by the al Waqf al Islami Foundation, a well-funded Saudi-based organization. These courses, characterized by the extreme anti-Western views expressed, were attended by hundreds of Islamic radicals from across Europe, including some of the planners of the 9/11 attacks. According to Dutch intelligence sources, Mounir Motassadeq, convicted last February for his role in the infamous Hamburg cell, received funding at the al Furqan mosque.

The purported leader of the 12 is Kassim al Ali (aka Abu Bilal), a 28-year-old Iraqi Shiite who also frequented Furquan. Al Ali arrived in Holland in 1997 and immediately asked for political asylum. But after discovering that Al Ali had previously attempted -- unsuccessfully -- to apply for asylum in Germany using the pseudonym "Talal Ala," Dutch police arrested him for carrying a false Iraqi ID. During their subsequent search of Al Ali's Arnhem apartment police found a diving license.

This seemingly insignificant discovery became vitally important when investigators discovered that Al Ali had once attended a diving school in Eindhoven called Safe Diving. More than 50 Muslims attended Safe Diving at the same time, unusual considering that Eindhoven is a relatively small town miles from the sea. Safe Diving owner Bill Megens told the Dutch newspaper Rotterdams Dagblad that most of the Muslim students wore traditional Arabic garments and had long beards. Several are well-known to Dutch intelligence as having radical ties. Investigators nicknamed them the "al Qaeda Diving Team."

The potential for both underwater and waterborne terrorist attacks remains a serious concern to law enforcement and intelligence authorities world-wide. In May of 2002 the FBI issued a bulletin warning that "various terrorist elements have sought to develop an offensive scuba diver capability." Manuals about scuba diving have been discovered in an al Qaeda safe house in land-locked Afghanistan. Al Qaeda also already carried out a deadly high-seas attack against the USS Cole in 2000. In addition, in 2002 Moroccan authorities thwarted a strike on British and U.S. ships in Gibraltar, arresting three Saudis. Interestingly, Al Ali's number was found in the telephone book of one of these men, Abdullah M'Sfer Ali al Ghamdi. Al Ali denies knowing al Ghamdi.

During the trial, Al Ali denied knowing the other 50 Muslim men with whom he attended the Safe Diving school. Displaying the arrogance he showed throughout the trial, he said that "It is difficult to introduce yourself underwater." Yet Bill Megens, the owner of Safe Diving, said that Al Ali appeared to be the leader of the group and that on the day the men took pictures together, everybody wanted to have a snapshot taken with Al Ali.

Still others among the 12 have ties that are worth investigating further. The Eindhoven mosque became known to the public when two young Moroccans that used to worship there were killed in Kashmir while fighting the Indian Army in January 2002. Intelligence gathered shows that some of the 12 knew these two Moroccans intimately. One of them, Anwar al Masrati, owned a photograph of one of the deceased youths and admitted having taught him Arabic and the Quran. Zouhair Tetouani, another member of the 12, was taped while telling one of his friends some unpublished details about the death of the two Moroccans. Mr. Tetouani's two e-mail addresses include the phrases "Preparing for Jihad" and "Dreamer of Paradise." Mr. Tetouani, like many of the 12, made no attempt to hide his allegiance to the jihadist cause.

This is a distressing example of the limitations placed on Dutch authorities in fighting and preventing terrorism, as intelligence agencies' efforts are all too often thwarted by liberal courts and inadequate laws. Another instance occurred last December, when a Rotterdam court acquitted four men accused of planning a suicide bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Paris. The Dutch magistrates involved in the case declared that there was "no independent investigation by the police." To say the least, a greater sense of urgency among the Dutch in the face of the imminent terrorist threat is paramount to the security not only of the Netherlands, but of nations across the world.
