From a strategic standpoint, I have to wonder if it isn't just a really bad idea for the dems to have their nominee all locked up way too early in the process.
When-- er... If he falls on his face in a few months, they'll be left without enough time to field a more competent candidate.
If this were reversed and it were the Republicans that were in this position, I would be nervous if I were them.

The right wing "ATTACK SQUAD" now has permission to let fly.

How did he get exactly the minimum needed to clinch the nomination?

You're right, and the whole Toricelli event was a practice
run for what's coming.
(Wellstone too, except that was unplanned, and fell in their
laps at about the right time to let them sharpen their skills)

They had to wait until the polls closed to report this, I guess, so Sharpton and Kucinich voteres wouldn't feel disenfranchised.

CNN regularly kept track of all the super-delegates that
had publicly DECLARED who they'd vote for.
That, plus the committed delegates from the primaries brought
him up to 2135 as of yesterday.
Today, either more delegates declared, OR CNN approached
some who had not yet declared and got a committment. Note
their story says it was a CNN survey.
...more from the CNN article...
Kerry's sweep of Tuesday's presidential primaries in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas left him just 27 delegate votes shy of securing his party's official nod. But additional support since then from Democratic Party officials and officeholders known as superdelegates has boosted Kerry to at least the 2,162 delegate votes he needs at the Democratic National Convention this summer in Boston.
That's when the nomination becomes official.
The number of delegates Kerry has is expected to climb before then as he meets and strategizes with Democrats.
Of Kerry's total delegates, 1,781 came from his strong showing in this year's Democratic primaries and caucuses, while 380 are superdelegates. The remaining delegate vote comes from supporters in American Samoa and from Democrats living abroad, who each will cast a fraction of a vote at the convention.

The right wing "ATTACK SQUAD" now has permission to let fly. Not yet. We don't want Kerry to fall on his face just yet. We want him to take the big dive right before the dem convention, or during. That will leave them with a new candidate that has no traction and no base, and not enough time to field a competent campaign.
And: dive he will. Kerry is a born loser.
