In 1992, and again in January 1999, Cotecna Inspection S.A. also secured a contract to inspect Iraq’s compliance with the “oil for food” program. Kofi Annan’s son by his previous marriage to a Nigerian woman, Kojo Annan, worked at Cotecna S.A. as an “senior staff member” until late 1997, and then became a partner in a Nigerian company whose clients reportedly included Cotecna. See LT, January 23, 1999.

In 1999, one of 25-year old Kojo’s other clients, a Nigerian company called Sutton Investments, won a six-million-British- pound subcontract from Cotecna to help monitor the UN's oil-for-food program in Iraq.

In 2000, the 26 year old Kojo was also serving as a Director of Air Harbour Technologies (AHT), an Isle-of-Man-registered company that in 1996 got the tender to build a controversial new multi-billion dollar airport in Harare from the widely-loathed Government of Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe.

Mr. Maugein, a billionaire with close ties to Jacques Chirac, is a longtime associate of the trader and former fugitive Marc Rich, who fled to Europe in 1983 to avoid answering charges of racketeering, illegal trading and dodging a tax-bill of $48 million. (Mr. Rich was pardoned by Bill Clinton in his final hours in the White House).

Mr. Maugein was also a close contact of Tariq Aziz, with whom he met regularly. He is the non-executive chairman of Soco International Plc., a publicly listed London-based petroleum exploration/production company, which goes into markets the majors tend to skip -- Mongolia, Vietnam, North Korea, Libya and Yemen

I'll take Door #1. As for Kojo, we'll probably find out that he's the Uday Hussein of the U.N. Can anything be found about this guy? It would be interesting to see what he's into.
