[history]
Pick up the Yellow Pages and go to "Guns." Call the first gun store you find. Ask what you'll need to purchase a semi-automatic military-style sniper rifle like the one used by John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo to kill 10 people during their 2002 Washington, D.C.-area murder spree.
"You have a driver's license?" said the man at the Long Island store I called yesterday to ask about buying the assault rifle known as the Bushmaster XM-15.
"Sure," I said, "but what else do I need to bring?"

Aks are great fun to shoot and do very well at what they were designed for: to kill people out to 200 yds. The ammo is cheap and the rifles are very reliable. But 500yds? I find it hard to believe that even the lefties are stoopid enough to believe this crap!

Same here. I bought an AR-15, and a semi-auto pistol at a gunshow in Mobile Alabama (I don't even live there). The backround check took about 30 minutes. What loophole?
If the bad guys are talking about private person to private person sales, then they don't need to mention gunshows. Private sales go on all the time, at places other than gun shows.

To be fair........(and we aren't like them now are we ?:o).....if ya buy from a "dealer" at a show the background is mandated. If ya buy from a Mom and Pop table selling what they don't need from their personal collection ya have no background check. At least that was the way it worked at the show I attended last month here in Texas. Local ordinance for ordnance may drive different rules but that was my last experience regarding the matter.
I have no problem with either method but I do prefer the constitutional version. The yellow sheet just ensures I won't have to hunt "them" when they turn to sedition and try to collect my constitutional freedoms. Consider it a crippled rabbit call for traitors.
Stay safe !

The only 'loophole' I've seen is that with my Texas CHL card, they don't bother to do any background check. Technically I could still have the card after being out on bail for murder.
Not that I care, but still.. :)

Aside from the obvious errata in this diatribe, this is just another example of some fusspot journalist who will write anything to justify his own personal agenda.
Sadly, most people are so misinformed or choose to remain ignorant that this kind of crap is believed by a large percentage of the public. Perhaps we need to start lobbying for a 'Truth in Journalism' law...

What's really fascinating is that he starts out with an illustration intended to point out how weak the so-called "Assault Weapons Ban" is, and then goes on to say that it needs to be renewed. If it's so useless, what's the point in renewing it?

If the Government does not take responsibility for protecting its citizens on an individual level, then it is criminal to deny the rights of individuals to protect themselves.I believe that needs to be repeated and digested.

The Savage Model 10(?) is supposed to shoot 1 MOA out of the box and can be made to shoot even better with very little work.

That's the most mystifying question in the world. If it sucks so bad, why the cries and crap about it going away if it's worthless?
Just shows they just want more 'ground', doesn't matter.

I was thinking paperwork - perhaps to verify my clean criminal record, my relative sanity, the lack of any documented connections between myself and al-Qaida.
Did a search on Vitello's columns on Newsday. Turns out he wrote a column in 1994 that mentioned the Brady Bill. He friggin' knows about the background check - but he pretends here that it doesn't exist. So he's not just misinformed, he's a liar - and Newsday should sanction him for this lie, just as the Times went after Jayson Blair.

I'm just an ole swamp rat from So Fla. My friends and relatives hunt, fish, dive and go airboatin'. Maybe I'm just naive, but I really don't know anyone that would read this article and believe even one word of it. Guess I need to broaden my horizons!
