WINTER SOLDIER: John Kerry's turning point
Detroit Free Press ^ | March 2, 2004 | JIM SCHAEFER

Thirty-three years ago this winter, more than a hundred Vietnam War veterans from around the United States gathered at a Howard Johnson hotel in Detroit's New Center.

In a second-floor ballroom, before an audience of hundreds of long-haired youths and conservatively dressed older people, the vets confessed to atrocities they claimed to have witnessed or committed in Vietnam, where hundreds of people on both sides still were dying each week.

Did anyone catch ABC news this morning showing a clip of John Mccain saying: "Don't beleive the Bush SMEAR MACHINE". They failed to mention however, that that clip was from 4 years ago when MCcain was in the primaries against Bush.

McCain once denounced Kerry, I think, but now they like each other. I don't what he has said recently.

"Thirty-three years ago this winter, more than a hundred Vietnam War veterans from around the United States gathered at a Howard Johnson hotel in Detroit's New Center."

Mr. Schaefer begins his article with a gross error - many of those "veterans" had never served in Vietnam and some had never even served in the military service. How Mr. Schaefer could remain ignorant of the facts after all these years is incredible.

No one has yet debunked a single Winter Soldier Investigation witness, at least not with any evidence we can use. One man, Guenter Lewy, has claimed to see a navy report, but that report remains lost.

In his book, America in Vietnam, author Guenter Lewy noted a subsequent inquiry by the Naval Investigative Service that found that many of the veterans who spoke in Detroit refused to be interviewed even when offered immunity, and some who reported the most grisly atrocities were fake witnesses who had used the names of real veterans.

In an interview, Lewy termed the Winter Soldier project "completely unreliable and untrustworthy" and doubts that Vietnam War atrocities were officially condoned or as widespread as the Detroit testimony indicated.

Lewy said he does not recall if he saw a copy of the naval investigative report or was briefed on its contents. "I'm quite confident the information is authentic," he said. Paul O'Donnell, a spokesman for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, said officials were searching for a copy of the report.

Bobby Muller, president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation and a Marine Corps veteran of the war, worked with the Vietnam Veterans Against the War. He stands by the Winter Soldier project and was unaware of any investigation that called into question the truthfulness of the participants.

FR's wintersoldier.com may yet debunk the WSI, or part of the WSI:

If Lewy doesn't turn up that report, this site might.

No doubt about it. It is a leftist meme as firmly planted as the one that says Joe McCarthy was nuts and was chasing phantoms.

The readers of this article should at least have access to the link WinterSoldier.com

I like that - "leftist meme".

Removing that meme might induce counter-cultural epileptic attacks. (Or something - joke in progress)

Addendum: We should still insist on verification of the WSI testimony. Just because it hasn't deen debunked, doesn't mean it's true

Burkett and Whitley did an outstanding job of research on "Stolen Valor".
Here is one comment they made about Kerry's VVAW buddy Al Hubbard:

"Hubbard claimed to be an Air Force pilot who was wounded in Vietnam. Truth: Hubbard was never a pilot, never an officer, never wounded and never assigned to Vietnam," said Burkett.

I was there in 68-69.

Choppers. We had hydraulic problems around 1850.

Bad timing. So we auto-rotated down to the ground 30 clicks west of Pleiku.

Dark now.

Fire perimeter established.2350 movement coming our way.

Heavy blasting on our part. Then quiet.

0530 we checked it out.

Much to our relief and despair, we found 11 dead nocturnal feeding mountain monkeys.

Fortunately, we found out that the Montanjhards were fond of monkey meat........

Yeah Ok, I made it all up.

I think Kerry did too.
