[history]
It happened at the annual Lincoln Day Dinner of the Allegheny County Republican Party, March 20, 1991, at the William Penn Hotel.
At the time the first George Bush was still flush with victory in the Persian Gulf, and dinnergoers chortled over a videotaped presentation of assorted senate Democrats backpedaling in the wake of a war they'd opposed. Ted Kennedy was shown. News clips were shown. But for Kerry, the speaker simply read the two letters, to everyone's amazement.

It's going to get ugly, methinks. You have to marvel at the liberals right now.
They know that Gay Marriage is opposed by 70% of the country, and so what do they do? They break the law, thumbing their noses at us.
These Kerry-ites are the people who defended Clinton. These are the people who almost stole the 2000 election.
Mark my words, Hillary will yet appear, I think right after Kerry's campaign is destroyed. McCauliffe going to ruin Kerry in such a way that he won't know what hit him...

Here's how a writer on a liberal website (
The American Prospect, which was co-founded by Robert Reich) handles the Kerry "problem."
TAPPED: Continuous commentary from The American Prospect Online.
MAILBAG MISHAPS. Noam Scheiber recalls an unfortunate incident back in 1991 where John Kerry's office sent out two letters on the first Gulf War, one to an opponent of the president's policy implying that Kerry shared that opposition and one to a supporter of the president's policy implying that Kerru shared that support. Only problem -- both letters were from the same constituent, Wallace Carter, and both wound up in the media. It's certainly hard to argue that this reflects well on Kerry, but my lowly placed sources on Capitol Hill mail-answering operations inform me that this sort of thing is quite common. Any time it's possible to imply that you agree with a constituent while remaining within the bounds of factual accuracy (which both Kerry letters are), you give it your best shot. The larger point here is probably less about Kerry per se than it is about the declining viability of this tactic in an internet age when there's no telling what someone's going to go post on the web.

"I can understand form letters.
But this is not a form letter....it is an outright DIFFERENT STANCE TAKEN IN EACH LETTER......this is incredible. "
===
Actually they look like form letters -- plural, specifically written one for each stance.
In Los Angeles, some years ago, rent control was a contentious issue at election time. One guy sent people living in apartments a letter, saying he will uphold and strengthen rent control, claiming to be "the father of rent control", then he sent those who owned apartments an opposite letter, claiming he is against rent control. This is fact, I had friends in both groups. When someone called his office about it, he waffled -- they should have called the LA Times.
The point is that despicable politicians are totally willing to lie and tell different groups of constituents what they want to hear, even if the two stances are polar opposites.
This is exactly what Kerry did. But people like that should not be president.

McCauliffe going to ruin Kerry in such a way that he won't know what hit him...Maybe so. If that scenerio plays out, it will be a joy to see Kerry fall. However, if it ever comes to a point where Hillary Clinton is elected president, or even VP (we all know what THAT would mean)....well, that cave I keep wanting to move into will still be there.

This is not nearly as bad as Algore selling his vote on the war for TV time. And what was worse than that, is the GOP NEVER used it as a campaign issue, EVER. Not once.
Sure, Limbaugh and other radio guys talked about it, but not a single time did I ever hear Bush41, or Bob Dole talk about it. Though Dole really couldn't as he was the one who bought the vote.
