DeKALB - Running against a field with deep pockets but little government experience, U.S. Senate candidate Steve Rauschenberger showed off his policy wonk side during a visit to the Chronicle Friday and argued that the popularity of his millionaire opponents in the March 16 Republi-can primary is waning.

Instead of the federal government relying on personal and corporate income taxes, he advocates taking a look at enacting a national sales tax in their place.

"Just because we've done this for 70 years doesn't mean it will work for our kids," he said of the current tax system.

To make a national sales tax more progressive, it could be structured to take effect only after a certain total dollar amount is spent.

Another man to help the Senate do what needs to be done.

John Linder in the House & Saxby Chambliss Senate, offer a comprehensive bill to kill all income and payroll taxes outright, and provide a IRS free replacement in the form of a pure consumption tax:

H.R.25, S.1493
A bill to promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national retail sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.

What is Jack Ryan's and Jim Oberweis' take in repealing federal income and payroll taxes?

Jack Ryan wants to repeal the capital gains tax. He's been endorsed by the Club for Growth as well as Jack Kemp.

1. Reduce the marginal income tax rates
2. Eliminate the capital gains tax
3. Cut federal spending

Will press for and support the repeal of all income & payroll taxes? We do have a bill before the Senate that will accomplish that. It would be nice to know where he is willing to take a public stand.

So far he does not seem to be willing to take any stand on this issue from what I can find on google.

I gather that he would not consider replacing the income tax with a sales tax to be his top tax priority, seeing as he places capital gains tax repeal and income tax reductions as the top priorities. That's a pretty big tax policy bite right there.

However, I would guess he'd be open to considering a national sales tax based on his expressed ideas regarding tax policy reform.

Why don't you ask him?

Why don't you ask him? Don't have time to track down every conservative candidate in the US. I look for what I can find in newswires & google, then depend on FR to clarify.

For the record, I think it says a lot that the Illinois Leader endorsement/survivor game came down to Jack Ryan and Steve Rauschenberger, who ending up winning the endorsement.

Both are good guys and good conservatives.

Neither do I! :)

For now, let's just say it's not in his platform.

I am a sales tax advocate as well, by the way, so if you could add me to your tax reform ping list, I'd appreciate it.

I could support either one in the general but continue to work hard on behalf of Rauschy in primary. Last night I attended Senate Candidate debate sponsored by the Cook County Republican Organization. It was a huge event. Maureen Murphy hosted the affair. All credible candidates, even Jon Wright from downstate Lincoln, were there -- with one notable exception, you guessed it JACK!. He was nowhere to be found. The emcee, Joe Morris, suggested he might still be waiting on the pizza guy.

They held two straw polls -- one on entrance and one after debate. Ryan came into the night drawing over 20% but only drew 4% coming out. Almost unbelieveably, Rauschenberger won coming and going!

And these were Cook County Republicans -- Rauschy's real strength was thought to be downstate/outstate. I believe that cardigan-man is on a roll!

Well that makes sense, him not being there and all!

But the hurt going to be real. He also no showed at recent Schaumburb event and came out with only 6%.

I am not one of those Ryan bashers, but here is the problem: He's got this sealed divorce paper thing hanging over him, he's got the FirstHealth thing still being kicked about that might cost him endorsements, and he's still not released his tax returns.

So what's he do? ... avoid the press and no-show at the podium, hoping he can hold on to whatever lead he thinks he has and coast home on TV ads alone. It may work, and I'm not saying there's anything necessarily wrong with him, but this type strategy WILL NOT WORK AGAINST THE 'RATS THIS FALL! They will eat him alive.

Neither Ryan nor Oberweis can match Rauschenberger for experience. He is an actual politician not just a rich guy looking to buy another Senate seat like the jerk who is giving it up.

Electability is another matter and no doubt he would be painted as more conservative than Jerry Falwell should he win the primary.

But please forget the falsehoods about his lack of conservativism and the superiority of his opponents NON-experience.

"He's (Jack Ryan)been endorsed by the Club for Growth as well as Jack Kemp."

The Club For Growth is firmly in favor of the FairTax. They persuaded Herman Cain to run in Georgia. If Ryan gets in, I would be surprised if he isn't at least mildly supportive.
