This review captures every point, and then some, that I felt about this wonderful film. You won't regret reading his review if you like Mel's Passion.

Beautifully done!!!

The scourging(which many strong men did not survive) and crufixtion was historically done sans any clothing, adding to the suffering and shame.

I watched it this afternoon. The disgusting Satan figure, with the worm peeking out his nose, sending the snake to Jesus' feet, in his agony in the garden....Mary, gutting it out as best she could, knowing this was his purpose, he MUST do this, and she had to accept it...the complete sadism of his Roman tormenters, rejoicing in ripping his body into hamburger, Simon of Cyrene first wanting no part of it, then helping, then screaming for them to leave him alone, becoming his brother...all too much. I will have to wait for the DVD release, so I can watch it in solitude, so I can absorb it all. I can't call it a "movie", it's something else.

"(The Most Complete and HONEST review yet)"

I agree. The author's suggestions to Mr. Gibson are spot on and his analysis is very focused and insightful. If I had the chance to speak to Mr Gibson I would tell thank him for the wonderful thing he has done.

I find it most interesting that this movie, because it is about Christ, is one of the only movies ever discussed about content. Sure, movies like Kill Bill might get discussed as to it's violence, but rarely are they discussed for their content.

And when the so-called "right" object to a movie for it's content, the same Hollyweird folks denounce them as against free speech.

But Mel makes a movie based on the Gospels and they all go nuts. No one was complaining when Robin Williams made that awful movie about a family in heaven and he went to hell to get his newly dead wife. Oh, that's called "visionary" and lauded as "artistic".

It's okay to parody heaven and hell in movie after movie, comedy or otherwise but once you actually take it seriously, it's now forbidden.

And to think this is the same Hollywood that once lavished awards on C.B. DeMille and movies like "The Robe", "Ben Hur", and "The Ten Commandements".

By today's standards, or lack thereof, these films today would be equally attacked.

Wake up America! Just quit paying money to see their crap in the theaters, on TV, vidoes and DVD's and believe you me, they'll change to what you want to watch.

I haven't been in a movie theater since "Spider-Man" and that was only to kill a few hours while family visited! lol

I'll rent some everyonce in a while but most are boring and predictable. I even get free HBO and Showtime (basic) on my cable system and there is hardly anything worth watching other than "The Sopranos".

I watch two, maybe three primetime TV shows (Frasier, That 70's Show, MadTV and I suffer through the occasional Enterprise).

The rest is canned laughter crap.

If some critics can't see the difference between this film and movies that delight in casual violence, they're in the wrong line of work.

Ditto that.

This is probably the best review I have yet seen.

Please don't donate any part of the profits to charity. Instead, use it to finance other films, so this faithful audience can have the visualized stories they hunger for. Keep the standards high, and the audience will only grow. This will do far more for Christianity -- and religious faith in general -- than any other donation you might make.
Just make "G-rated" movies which accord with Philippians 4:8, if you aren't inspired to do other biblical narratives.

I think it would be deadly to try to do another biblical narrative without inspiration, just because this one worked. And probably a change of theme is necessary just for you to keep in balance. Certainly wouldn't be good if you felt you were slipping if you made a movie that didn't gross $200 million . . .

Excellant Post! Thanks- I have read only a third so far but it is a joy already! I plan to see it a second time tomorrow during the day. The first time I was angry that I was consumed with the "controversies" while watching it.

Orson Scott Card - belated PING into a thread in full swing. Don't miss his review of THE PASSION!!

[please freepmail me if you want or don't want to be pinged to Orson Scott Card political articles]

If you want to bookmark his articles discussed at FR: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/k-orsonscottcard/browse

His own political website: http://www.ornery.org/index.html  is heavily populated by American- and other Leftists who are delightfully annoyed by Mr. Card's conservatism. He does not post on that site and its moderated by somebody else. He is a registered Democrat upset with hijacking of his party by the Left.

His literary, non-political website: http://www.hatrack.com

His fresh articles appear in the Rhinoceros Times, Greensboro, NC: http://www.rhinotimes.com/greensboro/  (before being posted permanently on his ornery website). He has 2 columns in the RhinoTimes: one on political/international events, and the second one: reviews on movies, books, and anything he wants (!). I check his and  Michael Medved's  reviews and found myself reliably relying on them.

"....please withdraw The Passion of the Christ from consideration for any and all awards."

A great point. Nothing says "screw you" quite like silence. This movie didn't need hollywood's money, didn't need hollywood's support, didn't need hollywood's inside propoganda machine.

Don't give the the honor of passing judgement.

But this structure did not stop Gibson from giving these hours of merciless torment the relief of meaning and context. Through brief flashbacks to moments in the past -- from tender scenes with his mother and the last supper with his disciples to the sermon on the mount -- Gibson reminds us of who the person was before he was physically tormented.

Right on target! Reminding us Who this person was before he was scourged and crucified, thereby putting that suffering into its proper context, is THE reason the media critics hate this movie. This is about the death of the Son of God, Who by that death provides forgiveness to a lost and sinful humanity. The message: Even the media naysayers need this Savior, and that is a message they detest.
