The campaign for the U.S. Senate has been dominated by big-spenders, at least if you use the TV ads and the polls as a guide.
For those who are mesmerized by fat campaign bank accounts, it should be remembered that just two years ago in a Republican primary for the U.S. Senate, little-known and lightly funded Jim Durkin defeated two opponents who vastly outspent him.
Can that happen again?
If it does, Republican Party voters will have cast aside the television blitz to find the one candidate who has a long and unmatched public record of independence and effectiveness. That is state Sen. Steven Rauschenberger, who is endorsed today by the Tribune.
... snip ...
... we have watched him for 11 years since he came to the Illinois Senate, and it has been an absolutely exceptional performance.
... snip ...
In this primary field Rauschenberger brings by far the greatest experience and the greatest depth of thought on national issues. He would deliver the kind of creative leadership and integrity that Illinois has enjoyed from U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde, who has endorsed Rauschenberger.
... snip...
Voters, though, don't have to guess about Steve Rauschenberger. He has served them with unquestioned integrity and intelligence for more than a decade. He has done the job, and he has earned their support on March 16.

Let me add my personal endorsement which has been submitted to the Chicago Tribune as well as these other NW Suburban newspapaers as a letter to the editor: Daily Herald, Arlington Heights Post, Des Plaines Times, Mount Prospect Times, and Park Ridge Herald (all as yes unpublished).
GOP U.S. Senate Race
Egads! What a time to be an Illinois Republican. The top three millionaire candidates, according to recent polls, seem to be endlessly refining their positions on the issues while chasing each other around and around a vicious circle of aspersions and innuendo. So many TV commercials such raw political energy! Yet not one of these guys has ever won an election or served a single day in public office!
The compelling choice for me is State Senator Steve Rauschenberger. He has a real record on the real issues that has been defined by over 5000 roll call votes in the Illinois State Senate. You may not agree with every vote Steve has cast I know I don't but at least you know where he stands. The millionaire political novices have never once had to stand up and be counted on any issue in any forum where it actually mattered! What's more, Rauschenberger has been the only GOP senate candidate to take a hard stand against the forces of corruption in the Illinois Republican Party.
I urge you to join me in voting for Steven J. Rauschenberger, Republican for U.S. Senate, in the March 16 primary and again in November!
C'mon Illinois FReepers, let's unite behind this outstanding candidate! Grass roots activism REQUIRED!!!

Is this the Senate seat that Nancy Skinner, esteemed co-host of the Doug Stephan Show, is also running for (as a democrat, of course)? Nancy Skinner = Hillary Lite.

Just assure me that this isn't Jim Warren (of the Tribune Editorial Dept.) endorsing this guy... The Trib used to be a great paper (the World's Greatest Newspaper)... I'm afraid it lost that claim about 20 years ago.
To: ReleaseTheHounds
I believe it's a consensus endorsement. Warren's name doesn't ring a bell, are you sure he is still on staff. BTW, I agree the Trib has been headed slowly downhill ever since the Colonel's demise.

We are promoting Steve Rauschenberger on the southside. The Orland Township Republican Organization has gathered signatures, distributed yard signs, and invited him to an event we held. His brother and campaign manager came and wowed the crowd.
What impressed me the most is a little thing. They were the only candidates that picked up the left over literature and signs before they left. I told John (his brother) that I appreciated his care of campaign assets, which came from donations.
The other guys' reps, with the exception of Dr. Kathuria, left their literature laying around for us to throw away. The worst offenders was the Ryan crew.

James Warren has been the Washington Bureau Chief of the Tribune for several years, and has been the talking head on cable shows from the Trib. Sort of like the amoral leftist Albert Hunt has been the TV face of the Wall Street Journal.

Daily Herald just endorsed Rauschy, too!

James Warren has been the Washington Bureau Chief of the Tribune for several years In that case, I'm pretty sure he had nothing to do with Steve's endorsement.

I need to go get my weekly dose of salvation and then attend a Lincoln Day Luncheon to talk up Rauschy. I'll be back on board about 4pm.

It is indeed. Compared to Hillary, Nancy Skinner is infinitely better looking (but, zero times anything is still zero), probably not as smart, with much more personality and less of a cold, calculating, cruel nature. Ms. Skinner is an enthusiastic, drink the Kool-Aid liberal, who believes in her cause and believes that Republicans are inherently evil and stupid. Just like most of the other Democratic Party. But, you probably knew all of that, if you have heard her on the radio.

SENATE CANDIDATE FAVORS CCW KIND OF
State Senator Steven Rauschenberger favors CCW, even for teachers. But wait till you read his training requirements! Still better than nothing I guess. This candidate is probably going to be the I$RA endorsed candidate. You read it here first.
"If people are willing to engage in more than 37 hours of firearms training, be certified, be reviewed by their [local] law-enforcement officials and undergo a psychiatric profile and can demonstrate a need, they ought to be licensed to protect themselves," Rauschenberger said.

SENATE HOPEFUL RAUSCHENBERGER BACK PEDALS ON ARMED TEACHERS
"While appearing on a radio program recently, he was asked his position on whether citizens should be allowed to carry concealed handguns.
Rauschenberger has been a supporter of such legislation in the Illinois Senate, 'as long as a citizen received law enforcement-approved training and underwent an extensive criminal background check.'
But this time he was asked a more specific question.
Would he allow teachers to carry concealed handguns into the classroom?
'Yes,' Rauschenberger said.
He now claims that he was thinking of the Columbine High School massacre at the time.
Teachers should have a right to protect themselves and their students from school violence, Rauschenberger explained in defending his answer.
On Tuesday, however, Rauschenberger's campaign issued a news release containing the following paragraph.
'Upon further reflection, and the solicited advice from law enforcement, education and teachers, including my wife Betty, I have concluded that the risks of having a loaded gun in a classroom outweigh any possible benefits. As such, I do not support legislation that would allow teachers to carry guns in classrooms.
