SENATE HOPEFUL RAUSCHENBERGER BACK PEDALS ON ARMED TEACHERS
"While appearing on a radio program recently, he was asked his position on whether citizens should be allowed to carry concealed handguns.
Rauschenberger has been a supporter of such legislation in the Illinois Senate, 'as long as a citizen received law enforcement-approved training and underwent an extensive criminal background check.'
But this time he was asked a more specific question.
Would he allow teachers to carry concealed handguns into the classroom?
'Yes,' Rauschenberger said.
He now claims that he was thinking of the Columbine High School massacre at the time.
Teachers should have a right to protect themselves and their students from school violence, Rauschenberger explained in defending his answer.
On Tuesday, however, Rauschenberger's campaign issued a news release containing the following paragraph.
'Upon further reflection, and the solicited advice from law enforcement, education and teachers, including my wife Betty, I have concluded that the risks of having a loaded gun in a classroom outweigh any possible benefits. As such, I do not support legislation that would allow teachers to carry guns in classrooms.

Other than than one thoughtful back-pedal, I think the Second Amendment has no better friend in Illinois.
