CIA sees wave of Bin Laden wanna-bes

The CIA warned last week that dozens of anti-American extremist groups have emerged in recent years. "These far-flung groups increasingly set the agenda and are redefining the threat we face," CIA Director George Tenet told Congress.

These groups span the globe, have taken part in attacks on American interests and strive for another "spectacular" strike on the U.S. to rival Sept. 11, Tenet said.

Here are nine of them:

* Al-Zarqawi network (Iraq) - The one-legged Jordanian terror mastermind Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi is suspected of staging suicide bombings across Iraq. A letter recovered last month written by al-Zarqawi showed he was trying to enlist the help of Osama Bin Laden's group.

* Ansar Al Islam (Iraq) - A Kurdish extremist group tied to the al-Zarqawi network and Al Qaeda, Ansar is suspected of carrying out some of the most terrifying suicide attacks, including the simultaneous bombings of two Kurdish political parties' headquarters in northern Iraq this month. Before the Iraq war, Ansar was believed to be involved with manufacturing ricin poison at a factory near the Iranian border.

* Jemaah Islamiyah (Southeast Asia) - Considered Al Qaeda's southeast Asian franchise, this group is accused of engineering the 2002 Bali bombing that killed 200. The group also is suspected in the August 2003 car bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, where more than a dozen were slain.

* Egyptian Islamic Jihad/Al-Jihad - Members aligned with Al Qaeda have been implicated in helping execute the deadly 1998 East Africa U.S. Embassy bombings and the 2000 attack on the destroyer Cole.

* Abu Sayyaf (Philippines) - 1993 WTC bombing plotter Ramzi Yousef allegedly trained guerrillas for this group. In May 2000, they kidnapped three Americans, including Guillermo Sobero, who was later beheaded. The Bush administration facilitated a $300 million ransom payment for Martin and Gracia Burham from the Florida-based New Tribes Mission, but the captives were not released and Martin was later killed in crossfire during a Philippine Army raid to free them.

* Lashkar I Jhangvi (Pakistan/Kashmir) - The Al Qaeda-linked Kashmiri separatist group was implicated with another ring, Jaish-e-Mohammed, in the February 2002 kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

* Hezbollah/Islamic Jihad (West Bank/Gaza Strip/Lebanon/Iran) - Committed to the destruction of Israel, Hezbollah killed hundreds of Americans in the 1980s with truck bombings that leveled the U.S. Embassy and Marine Corps barracks in Beirut. Sources say recent intelligence pointed to a Hezbollah bomb plot that forced a one-day shutdown of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

* Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan - In 2000, terrorists from this group fighting for an Uzbek Islamic state kidnapped four American mountain climbers who escaped after pushing a guard off a cliff. IMU fighters battled U.S. forces alongside the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Nine reasons never, ever, ever vote for the rat party.

After we kill bin Ladin (and we will!) the enemy is just getting started with us. I agree with Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's analysis that this will be 10 year war.

I agree with Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's analysis that this will be 10 year war.

I fell that 10 years is optimistic. The earlier Crusades lasted much longer and it is important to remember that despite revisionist history, the Crusades were defensive wars begun after years of Muslim aggression to destroy the Christian lands, nations, and peoples. They were not a case of bored nobles looking for new lands to conquer or to relieve population pressure.

As un-PC the term is, we are engaged in a third Crusade to repel the latest aggression of invaders hell bent on establishing one world under Muslim rule and all other beliefs lost to genocide or slavery.

This war could easily last the century or like efforts against crime, be a ongoing process...the price of civilization.

"The price of civilization."

I like that term. Whether the war lasts 10 or 100 years, we are lost if we do not completely remove the democrats from all power.

I like that term.

Thanks. Although, you might want to consider having some DemoRats in office - under the heading of useful idiots. Good is difficult to illustrate without evil for comparison.

Spartacus? Would that the al Queda show any courage. They hid in the dark, cowardly rodents that they are.
